The Twins got another unwelcome setback on Wednesday, and this one lands at the worst possible moment. Byron Buxton is headed back to the 10-day injured list with a right hip impingement, the club announced, leaving Minnesota without its All-Star center fielder as it tries to stay in the thick of the AL Central race.
To fill the roster spot, the Twins recalled infielder Tristan Gray from Triple-A St. Paul.
It’s the second IL stint of the season for Buxton, and both have been tied to the same hip. He first went on the 10-day IL on July 6 with a right hip strain, then returned on July 20. Less than two weeks later, he’s back on the shelf while Minnesota is trying to keep pace in a crowded playoff chase.
Buxton’s season has still been a strong one at the plate. He earned an All-Star nod earlier this month, even though injury kept him from playing in the game, and he’s hitting .263/.320/.544 with 25 home runs and 45 RBI in 82 games.
He’s also added 16 doubles and a triple. But the bat had cooled after his return, and over his last seven games he hit just .160.
Minnesota was preparing to face the Kansas City Royals with Luke Keaschall in Buxton’s spot on Wednesday. The Twins entered the game at 54-54, two games behind the Chicago White Sox in the division and a half-game out of the final AL wild card spot. They’re also hoping the trade deadline brings help as they chase the White Sox and Cleveland Guardians, the teams currently ahead of them.
Buxton’s name had even surfaced in trade speculation a month ago, though the longtime Twin has made it clear he wants to stay in Minnesota. With the club’s recent rise in the standings, a deal always seemed unlikely. Now the injury makes the picture even clearer, and as a 10-5 player, Buxton can veto any trade anyway.
Gray has been a useful piece for the Twins this season, appearing in 63 games and posting a .232/.271/.333 line with four home runs and 25 RBI. It’s already the best season of his career; before this year, he had played in just 47 major league games.
