Twins Challenge Liam Hendriks to Elevate His Game This Season

As the Twins eye a successful season, all eyes are on Liam Hendriks to rise to the challenge and anchor the bullpen amidst looming concerns.

Liam Hendriks has already carved out an impressive legacy in the majors, boasting accolades like three-time All-Star, two-time All-MLB First Team, and AL Reliever of the Year. His remarkable return from non-Hodgkin's lymphoma to claim the 2023 AL Comeback Player of the Year title only adds to his inspiring journey.

Yet, Hendriks isn't ready to hang up his glove. After turning down the Boston Red Sox's 2026 option, he's inked a minor league deal with the Minnesota Twins. The Twins are eyeing him for the closer role, but early spring raised a few eyebrows.

Hendriks was among the last pitchers to hit the mound in an exhibition game, and when he did, his fastball lacked its usual zip. While this might be a red flag, his overall spring performance has been promising. With other relievers struggling, Twins insider Matthew Leach believes the onus is on Hendriks to rise to the occasion.

"Eric Orze, who had a lot of potential, has struggled with control, walking six batters in just over six innings. Justin Topa has taken some hits, and while Cole Sands has been decent and Zak Kent shows promise, I still think they need another strong right-handed option.

If Hendriks can really find his groove, he could be that missing piece. Although he's improving, he hasn't quite hit his stride as a closer yet."

The Twins might have benefited from another right-handed pitcher, but at this stage, trades seem unlikely. It's up to Hendriks to channel the form that made him a standout All-Star, or the team might find themselves in a bind.
