Minnesota Twins Reliever Stuns Fans by Opting Out Before Season Opener

In a decisive move ahead of the 2026 season, reliever Matt Bowman opts out of his Twins contract following an impressive spring performance, leaving Minnesota with critical roster decisions.

As the Minnesota Twins gear up for their 2026 season opener, Spring Training is winding down, and the team is honing in on its final roster decisions. With the first pitch just days away in Baltimore, the focus is on finalizing the 26-man roster, a task that's seen some seasoned relievers opting out.

Recently, Liam Hendriks and Andrew Chafin were informed they wouldn't be part of the squad, and now Matt Bowman has followed suit by exercising his opt-out.

Matt Bowman's Decision

Matt Bowman, who rejoined the Twins as a non-roster invitee, has been a standout this spring. Despite a stellar 0.00 ERA during his appearances and a strong showing with Team Israel, Bowman has opted to test his options.

In his outings, he pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing just one unearned run, striking out six, and walking two. On Sunday, he continued his impressive form with two scoreless innings, giving up only a single hit.

The Twins now face a decision: either include Bowman on the 26-man roster or grant him his release. He’s part of a competitive group of non-roster relievers vying for limited spots.

Bowman also showcased his skills in the World Baseball Classic, delivering three innings with just one hit for Team Israel. Last season, he pitched 24 2/3 innings for the Orioles, posting a 6.20 ERA. His career has seen its ups and downs, making this decision pivotal for both Bowman and the Twins.

Minnesota Twins Bullpen Outlook

If Bowman doesn’t make the cut, the Twins will reduce their roster to 36 players in Fort Myers, needing to trim ten more before Opening Day. The bullpen is expected to feature eight pitchers, with Cole Sands, Taylor Rogers, Justin Topa, and Anthony Banda as likely locks. Eric Orze and Zak Kent, both on the 40-man roster, also seem secure in their spots.

The final bullpen slots could go to non-roster invitees like Cody Laweryson and Dan Altavilla, with Grant Hartwig still in the mix. After last season’s trade deadline reshuffle, the Twins' bullpen needs to re-establish its strength and reliability.

As the regular season looms, the Twins are focused on solidifying a bullpen that can deliver under pressure, ensuring they’re ready to compete from the first pitch.
