The Minnesota Twins are in the market for more starting pitching, and the latest move by the Chicago Cubs could put a familiar name on their radar.
Chicago designated right-hander Jameson Taillon for assignment on Monday, and Minnesota has reason to at least kick the tires. The Twins’ rotation has Joe Ryan, Taj Bradley, Bailey Ober, Connor Prielipp and Zebby Matthews right now, but the cushion behind that group is thin. Pablo López is out until next year, Mick Abel and David Festa appear headed for the rest of the season on the sidelines, Mike Paredes recently landed on the IL, and Kendry Rojas has been limited to roughly 4-5 innings a start.
That kind of setup leaves Minnesota vulnerable, even with five healthy starters on hand. Adding another arm would give the club more options, whether that means shifting Matthews or Prielipp to the bullpen or sending one of them to Triple-A for now.
Taillon is a logical name to watch, though the Twins may be better off waiting to see whether he gets through waivers and reaches free agency. He is owed $18 million this year and is in the final season of the four-year, $68 million deal he signed with Chicago before the 2023 season. That salary, along with his recent struggles, makes a waiver claim seem unlikely.
The numbers this season have been rough. Taillon owns a 5.92 ERA and a 6.74 FIP in 76 innings over 15 starts, and he has allowed the most home runs in the National League with 25.
Still, the Twins could have interest if the price drops enough. Minnesota needs depth, and Taillon showed last season that he can still be useful, posting a 3.68 ERA in 129 1/3 innings. If he becomes available at the right cost, the Twins would have a chance to add a veteran starter who could keep taking the ball and work in meaningful games for a club still in the postseason race.
