The Phillies may be hunting for a right-handed bat in the outfield, but Byron Buxton doesn’t sound like a realistic answer.
Philadelphia entered the All-Star break just 2.0 games behind the Braves in the NL East, putting them in position not only to chase a playoff spot but to push for the division title, too. Even with that standing, the roster still has some obvious holes, and the need for a right-handed hitting outfielder sits near the top of the list.
Buxton, of course, would fit that description cleanly. The Minnesota Twins outfielder has been a natural name to surface as the trade deadline approaches. But when Tim Kelly of On Pattison asked him at the All-Star Game in Philadelphia about the possibility of waiving his no-trade clause for the Phillies, Buxton shut the door.
"I asked Byron Buxton if there would be any wiggle room on waiving his no-trade clause if the Phillies were interested in trading for him: 'I ain't going nowhere,'" Kelly reports.
That lines up with the stance Buxton has already taken earlier this season, when his name kept popping up in trade chatter. The message has stayed the same: he’s not planning to approve a move.
So while the Phillies could still check in before the August 3 trade deadline, Buxton doesn’t look like a live option. If Philadelphia wants to upgrade that spot, it will probably have to turn elsewhere.
Names like Taylor Ward, Jo Adell, and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. remain in the mix, along with whatever other right-handed hitting outfielders become available. But Buxton, at least for now, appears to be staying put in Minnesota.
