Timberwolves Stun Boston, Snapping Decades-Long Losing Streak

Timberwolves break a long Boston losing streak with standout performances led by Bones Hyland, securing their first road victory against the Celtics since 2005.

The Minnesota Timberwolves finally broke their Boston curse with a 102-92 victory over the Celtics at TD Garden on Sunday. This win was a long time coming, ending an 18-game losing streak in Boston that stretched back decades.

Bones Hyland was the man of the moment for Minnesota, coming off the bench to score 23 points on an efficient 8-of-14 shooting. He also contributed three rebounds and three assists, helping the Timberwolves improve their record to 44-28, with a solid 20-15 on the road.

To put this win in perspective, the last time the Timberwolves triumphed in Boston was in 2005. Back then, the starting lineup included legends like Kevin Garnett and Latrell Sprewell.

That game ended in a nail-biting 99-97 victory, sealed by Sprewell's clutch layup with just 0.9 seconds left. Garnett, fresh off an MVP season, delivered a stellar performance with 21 points, 13 rebounds, nine assists, and two steals, while Wally Szczerbiak added 20 points off the bench.

Interestingly, both Garnett and Szczerbiak later donned Celtics jerseys in their careers, adding another layer to this historical matchup.

When informed about the Timberwolves’ last win in Boston, a surprised Bones Hyland, who was just five years old at the time, remarked, “Dang, that doesn't even sound right. That's crazy.”

Hyland's performance was crucial, especially with Julius Randle struggling to find his rhythm, scoring just nine points on 3-of-14 shooting. Hyland has been stepping up in the absence of Anthony Edwards, who is out for two weeks with a knee injury.

Jaden McDaniels also played a significant role, adding 19 points, six rebounds, and three assists. Meanwhile, Ayo Dosunmu chipped in with 17 points, eight rebounds, six assists, and two blocks, showcasing the depth and versatility of the Timberwolves’ roster.

With this win, Minnesota is now 3-3 in their last six games. They'll look to build on this momentum when they host the Houston Rockets on Wednesday.
