Timberwolves Fall Back On One Thing For Playoff Run

Amidst injury setbacks and skepticism, the Timberwolves aim to harness their proven resilience for another playoff upset.

With Jaden McDaniels' injury casting doubt over his playoff availability, and the formidable form of the Los Angeles Lakers and Denver Nuggets, the Minnesota Timberwolves are likely to enter their first-round series as underdogs. It's easy to see why some might dismiss this unpredictable squad as early exits.

However, being underestimated is nothing new for the Timberwolves. Just two years ago, despite holding the No. 3 seed, they were only slight favorites against the Phoenix Suns, a team they eventually swept. They then faced the reigning champion Nuggets, pulling off a stunning seven-game victory.

Last season, even with a record nearly identical to the Lakers, 11 out of 12 ESPN experts favored LA. Yet, the Wolves triumphed in just five games, advancing to their second consecutive conference finals.

Anthony Edwards and his teammates thrived on the skepticism, using it as fuel throughout the playoffs. They'll need to tap into that same energy this year.

Reaching the conference finals again in a stacked Western Conference is no small feat. But the Timberwolves have a history of defying the odds, and it wouldn't be wise to count them out just yet.

The Timberwolves' Path to Proving Doubters Wrong

The likely first-round matchup against the Nuggets or Lakers will see many analysts favoring the opposition. However, the Timberwolves boast size, experience, and a balanced two-way game plan that could exploit the defensive vulnerabilities of both teams. Plus, having Anthony Edwards, a top-five talent, doesn't hurt their cause.

Should the Wolves advance past the first round, facing the San Antonio Spurs or Oklahoma City Thunder presents its own set of challenges. While many would write them off again, there’s a genuine chance for an upset. The Spurs' lack of playoff experience and Minnesota's regular-season success against OKC add intrigue to the potential matchups.

From an external viewpoint, another conference finals appearance might seem unlikely for the Timberwolves, but that's far from the belief within their locker room.

Historically, the Wolves shine brightest when underestimated. So, dismiss them at your own peril.
