Rob Dillingham’s latest headline has nothing to do with points, assists or playing time - and everything to do with how fast things can unravel in the public eye.
The former No. 8 overall pick was waived by the Charlotte Hornets on September 28, less than 24 hours after the team acquired him from the Chicago Bulls in a trade involving Buddy Hield. ESPN’s Shams Charania reported the move, which appeared to be driven more by Charlotte’s roster and financial flexibility than by any real opportunity for Dillingham to compete for a spot.
That decision created a $9.6 million trade exception for the Hornets.
But the roster move wasn’t the only reason Dillingham suddenly became a trending topic. A viral social media post tied him to influencer Tatiana Chanel after screenshots from an exposé video by social media personality Sumaya Mari allegedly showed an Instagram account associated with Dillingham sending Chanel the message, “I need you.”
In another exchange included in the video, the account was identified as belonging to Dillingham before Chanel seemingly replied, “Ewwwwww blocked.”
The screenshots spread quickly, with social media accounts presenting the apparent rejection as yet another blow for Dillingham right after his Hornets exit. But the images themselves appear to tell a different story. The dates shown in the screenshots are June 10, which would place the alleged exchange months before the September waiver, not after it.
The screenshots have not been independently authenticated, and Dillingham has not commented publicly on them. That leaves the nature of any previous relationship between Dillingham and Chanel unclear.
For now, the bigger issue is Dillingham’s basketball future. The 21-year-old entered the league as the No. 8 pick in the 2024 draft, selected by the San Antonio Spurs before being traded immediately to the Minnesota Timberwolves. He never found a steady role there, and Minnesota later moved him to Chicago at the 2026 trade deadline.
He did flash some value with the Bulls, putting up 9.6 points and 2.8 assists over 30 games. Charlotte looked like another chance, but that opportunity vanished before he even got to practice.
After clearing waivers, Dillingham is an unrestricted free agent, though he can’t immediately sign with Chicago. His age, speed, scoring touch and lottery pedigree could still make him appealing to another team.
So while the social media chatter has turned this into a brutal stretch for him, the timeline is not as dramatic as it first looked. The Hornets waived him quickly - but the alleged Chanel exchange appears to have happened long before that.

LaMelo Ball Faces The Timberwolves Pressure That Will Define This Move
LaMelo Balls arrival gives Minnesota a new layer of talent and intrigue, and it also brings a different kind of pressure than he faced in Charlotte. Over six seasons with the Hornets, Ball showed he can tilt an offense when he is rolling, but his move comes with the kind of scrutiny that follows a player expected to matter in bigger moments for a team with real postseason aspirations.
For the Timberwolves, the questions are less about flair than fit. Balls offensive gifts are obvious, but his durability has been a concern, and Minnesota needs to know he can stay available and hold up when the games turn more physical and the margins shrink. How he handles that challenge will go a long way toward defining whether this becomes a savvy addition or another frustrating what-if. [Read more 🡒]
Tim Connellys Wolves Vision Around Anthony Edwards Is Suddenly Clear
Minnesotas roster makeover has pushed the Wolves into a different phase, one built less around patching holes and more around lining up the next several seasons around Anthony Edwards. The group is now one of the youngest in the league, and the front office has clearly tilted toward a core that can grow together rather than one that simply tries to squeeze every last win out of the present.
Tim Connelly has been explicit about the logic behind the reset, framing the LaMelo Ball trade as a move that could address immediate needs while also stretching the teams competitive window. With almost everyone in the rotation cluster young enough to still be on the rise, Minnesotas plan is starting to look like a bet on continuity, development and a longer runway than the franchise has often had in the past. Timberwolves Keep Winning Big From The Rob Dillingham Decision
The Timberwolves decision to part with Rob Dillingham, Leonard Miller and multiple second-round picks in the deal that brought in Ayo Dosunmu is looking better by the day. Minnesota has gotten real on-court value back from Dosunmu, who has fit cleanly into the rotation and played well enough to make the front office feel even better about the move.
Dosunmus comfort in Minnesota has only added to the appeal, especially after he signed a new five-year contract and spoke about how strong his connection to the team and city has become. What makes the trade stand out even more is what happened to Dillingham after Chicago moved him on, a reminder that sometimes a front-office swing is judged as much by the return as by the names leaving town.
