Niko Medved, the head coach of Gopher Basketball, shared his thoughts after a tough loss to Rutgers. While the postseason remains uncertain, this team has set a promising standard for the future.
Medved's Opening Remarks
"Losing is tough, no doubt about it. We expected a battle against Rutgers and that's exactly what we got.
Turnovers were our Achilles' heel, especially with 15 overall and 10 in the second half. But credit goes to Rutgers for their performance.
"It's hard for the team right now, facing the end of the season. But I couldn't be prouder of how they responded to adversity and injuries.
Winning eight games in this league and finishing 11th is something to be proud of. As time passes, they'll appreciate their accomplishments even more."
Looking Ahead for the Program
Reflecting on the season, Medved acknowledged the challenges: "We faced hit after hit, losing players and ending up with just one available post player. Yet, winning four of the last six games was incredible.
Our goal was to excite fans about the program's direction, and I believe we achieved that. The energy in the arena and the support from fans were fantastic.
While this loss stings, the future of Gopher basketball looks bright."
Challenges in the Second Half
Medved noted, "We've been good at protecting the ball this year, but Rutgers ramped up the pressure in the second half, and we struggled. It's a credit to them, but we needed to handle it better. It was a dogfight, and that was the difference."
Postseason Possibilities
Considering the postseason, Medved said, "It's too early to decide. We need a few days to assess our situation and see if it makes sense for this group to participate.
They've been through a lot, but earning a chance to continue would be great. We'll see where things stand soon."
Setting the Tone for the Future
Medved emphasized the team's cultural achievements: "They embraced unselfishness, competitiveness, and coachability, setting a high standard. It's something fans can rally behind.
As we retain current players and recruit new talent, we're building on a strong foundation. Our history of developing players and winning at high levels is a great selling point.
I'm excited about what lies ahead."
This season, despite its challenges, has laid the groundwork for a promising future for Gopher Basketball, with Medved at the helm steering toward success.
