With Minnesota football coming off an eight-win season in 2025, the conversation around the Gophers this fall isn’t just about who’s best. It’s about who matters most when the pressure hits and the margins get thin. That’s the lens here, and it puts linebacker Maverick Baranowski squarely in the spotlight.
Baranowski’s value showed up everywhere last season. The Ponce Inlet, Florida, native started all 13 games and finished as Minnesota’s tackle leader with 103, including 52 solo stops.
He also became the first Gopher since Blake Cashman to top 100 tackles in a season, with Cashman posting 104 in 2018. Add in nine tackles for loss and three sacks, and the production speaks for itself.
He’s now heading into his final year as the center of that linebacker room, and Minnesota leans on him in another crucial way: he wears the “green dot,” meaning he gets the communication from the sideline on plays and adjustments.
That role became even more important after Cody Lindenberg chose to enter the NFL Draft following the 2024 season. Minnesota needed someone to take command in his absence, and Baranowski answered that call last fall. On and off the field, he’s become a defining piece for Danny Collins’ side of the ball.
Other players who were in the mix for the top ten included rush end Karter Menz, defensive back Aidan Gousby, receivers Javon Tracy and Noah Jennings, and defensive tackle Naquan Crowder.

Niko Medveds first year-plus at Minnesota has been enough for the Gophers to move early on his contract, a sign the program wants to make its intentions plain after a reset on the sideline. Pending Board of Regents approval, the mens basketball coach is in line for a one-year extension that would keep him under contract through the 2031-32 season, along with a $200,000 raise that lifts his total compensation to $3.2 million.
The timing matters as much as the numbers. Medveds original deal included a review point that was not supposed to arrive yet, but Minnesota chose to revisit it sooner and fold in the enhancements now, which says plenty about how the school views the direction of the program.
