The next date to watch in Cade Tyson’s eligibility case is now on the calendar.
A special session hearing for Wisne vs. NCAA has been scheduled for Oct. 13 in the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals in Denver, a court clerk told the Pioneer Press on Thursday.
That timing puts the ruling squarely in the middle of Minnesota’s preseason ramp-up. The Gophers open their exhibition schedule Oct. 15 against Omaha at The Barn, then begin the regular season Nov. 2 against North Dakota.
Tyson has already been around the program this fall, enrolled in classes at the U and practicing with the Gophers while he waits to see whether he’ll get an added year of eligibility for the 2026-27 season.
The former wing was sixth in the Big Ten in scoring last season at 19.6 points per game and is part of a broader group of players from the class of 2022 seeking another season under the new NCAA eligibility rule that allows five years to play five seasons.
Roster space had looked like the biggest obstacle, since Minnesota currently lists 15 players and that was believed to be the cap. But the U told the Pioneer Press in August that the House vs.
NCAA settlement allows for Designated Student-Athletes, or DSAs, who do not count against the cap. That means the Gophers technically have room for Tyson if he is cleared.
If Tyson is made eligible, NIL compensation would also be available for him, the Pioneer Press understands.
Tyson’s college path has taken him from Belmont for his first two seasons to one year each at North Carolina and Minnesota. Across 124 games, he has scored 1,621 points, hit 213 3-pointers and collected 528 rebounds.
