Cade Tyson is back in the building for Minnesota, but his status for this season is still up in the air.
The Gophers said Tuesday that Tyson has rejoined the men’s basketball program, is practicing with the team and has enrolled in classes while he waits for an NCAA eligibility ruling. Minnesota is heading toward the 2026-27 season, and for now, the former team scoring leader is back on campus without a final answer on whether he’ll actually play.
“We’re excited to have Cade rejoin our program,” head coach Niko Medved said. “We’re here to support him in any way we can through this process and are looking forward to having Cade around the facility and program.”
Tyson’s case lands in the middle of a bigger mess around NCAA eligibility rules, which are being challenged in court and have left plenty of athletes in limbo. Some recent rulings have opened the door for players to keep competing while those cases work through the legal system, but the overall picture remains unsettled.
Tyson is part of one of those challenges. According to an Associated Press report, he was among 12 athletes named in a federal lawsuit in Colorado that seeks an additional year of eligibility for members of the high school graduating class of 2022.

Sweeney granted a preliminary injunction for athletes in that class with similar circumstances, letting them compete during the 2026-27 academic year while the case continues. The ruling temporarily blocks the NCAA from enforcing the challenged eligibility determination against those athletes.
If Tyson gets the green light, Minnesota would be getting back one of the Big Ten’s most dangerous scorers. The 6-foot-7 guard/forward was an All-Big Ten honorable mention pick last season after averaging 19.6 points per game and finishing as the Gophers’ leading scorer with 628 points. He also led the team in free throws made and attempted, going 175-for-213, while topping Minnesota in minutes played at 36.7 per game and field goals made and attempted at 191-for-382.
Across four college seasons split between Belmont, North Carolina and Minnesota, Tyson has piled up 1,621 points, 213 made three-pointers and 528 rebounds in 124 games.
Minnesota didn’t offer any specifics on Tyson’s individual eligibility situation. For now, he’ll keep practicing with the team and wait for the final call.
The Gophers open the regular season Nov. 2 against North Dakota.
