Gophers Finally Get A Trophy Day Fans Have Waited Decades For

In a historic upset, the Gophers clinched their first Little Brown Jug victory over Michigan in decades, showcasing their defensive prowess.

Minnesota finally got its hands back on the Little Brown Jug, and it did it by surviving its own mistakes and then absolutely strangling Michigan’s offense in the second half.

The Gophers beat the Wolverines 20-14 on Saturday in the rivalry’s 100th meeting for the Jug, a game that flipped from anxious to historic once Minnesota’s defense took over. Drake Lindsey’s two interceptions in the first half gave Michigan life - one led directly to a touchdown, and another was returned for a score - and Minnesota went into halftime trailing 17-14.

From there, though, the game turned into a defensive takeover. Michigan’s third quarter was almost impossible to believe: the Wolverines ran only two offensive plays the entire period, gaining five yards on the ground before Ayden West intercepted them.

Their only other possession in that quarter ended with a muffed punt, which Minnesota recovered and turned into a field goal. Two plays, two turnovers, 15 minutes gone.

The fourth quarter wasn’t any kinder to Michigan. Minnesota opened the period with another field goal, then watched the Wolverines take over still leading 14-13.

On first down, Jaxon Howard hit Bryce Underwood as he was throwing, and Zach Harden came away with the interception. That made it three plays and three turnovers across 15 minutes and nine seconds.

This time, the Gophers cashed in. Noah Jennings took a receiver handoff 31 yards to set up first and goal at the 4, and two snaps later Lindsey connected with Darius Taylor on a 3-yard touchdown pass to put Minnesota ahead for good.

Even with a 20-14 lead and 14 minutes left, nobody in maroon and gold could breathe easy yet. But the defense kept rolling.

Michigan still had three more possessions while Minnesota played it cautiously on offense, and the Wolverines never found a way through. The Gophers held Underwood in check, recorded two sacks, and eventually got the ball back with 32 seconds left.

From there, it was over. Minnesota went to victory formation, ran out the clock, and the team sprinted to claim the Little Brown Jug.

It was Minnesota’s first win with the Jug in hand since 1977, and only its fifth in the last 49 tries. The Gophers are now 4-1 and head to Purdue next Saturday for a 7:00 kickoff in West Lafayette. For now, though, the Jug belongs to Minnesota - and it will sit alongside Paul Bunyan’s Axe in the trophy case.

Gophers Beat Michigan But The Polls Still Sent A Message

Beating Michigan should have been the kind of result that changes a teams standing in a hurry, especially for a Minnesota group with so much history working against it in that matchup. Instead, the latest AP and Coaches Polls delivered a more modest verdict on the Gophers, who sat just outside the top 25 after the win and had to settle for being an also-considered team in both rankings.

Minnesota collected 19 votes in the AP Poll, tied for 32nd, and 40 in the Coaches Poll, which placed it 33rd. For a program that finally banked a signature victory over the Wolverines, the message from the voters was clear enough: the win mattered, but not enough to fully change perceptions yet. Gophers Waste Strong Start In Frustrating Season Opener Loss

A delayed start and a promising opening quickly gave way to a frustrating night for Minnesota, which opened its 2026-27 season with a 3-2 loss to Michigan Tech at John MacInnes Student Ice Arena. The Gophers did enough early to put themselves in position, getting goals from Tate Pritchard and Beckett Hendrickson while Luca Di Pasquo turned aside several dangerous chances in net.

Michigan Tech still found a way to finish the job, scoring the winner late in the third period and sending Minnesota home with a loss in its first game of the year. For a team trying to set the tone right away, the mix of a slow rink, a strong start and a late collapse made this one feel like a missed opportunity. [Read more 🡒]
