Minnesota football is stepping into a new era of college sports sponsorship, and Visible is going with it.
Gopher Athletics and Learfield’s Gopher Sports Properties announced a first-of-its-kind partnership that will put the Visible logo on the back of every Minnesota football helmet beginning September 12. That makes Minnesota one of the first programs in college athletics - and the first Learfield university partner - to place a corporate brand on its football helmet.
The debut will come in a national spotlight. Minnesota opens the new look at Huntington Bank Stadium against Mississippi State on CBS at 2:30 p.m.
CT. The game is also Minnesota’s “Gold Out,” with the stadium set to be filled in the team’s signature color for the first meeting between the two programs.
“As college athletics continues to evolve, it's important that we identify innovative opportunities that strengthen our programs and department and continue to help provide a world-class experience for our student-athletes,” said Thomas O. Moe, Director of Athletics Mark Coyle.
“We are excited to welcome Visible and proud to be among the first programs in the country to introduce helmet bumper branding. This partnership reflects the continued momentum of our department and our commitment to building relationships with organizations that invest in the future of Gopher Athletics.”
The move comes after the NCAA recently approved commercial logos on college athletic uniforms, creating one of the newest sponsorship lanes in the sport. Minnesota is moving quickly to take advantage, placing Visible in one of the most visible spots on the field as the Gophers take part in a Big Ten stage game.
For Visible, the deal gives the brand a high-profile entry into the Twin Cities and a direct line to Minnesota fans. “Appearing on every Minnesota football helmet gives Visible a bold presence on one of college football's biggest stages,” said David Kim, President at Verizon Value.
“We're proud to partner with Gopher Athletics on this first-of-its-kind opportunity and to bring Visible to Minnesota fans in a way that is distinctive and true to our brand. As we continue to build our presence in the Twin Cities, we're excited to be part of this moment in Gopher Athletics and connect with the passionate community that supports the team.”
Learfield also framed the partnership as a sign of where college sports sponsorship is headed. “Helmet branding represents a new opportunity in college sports, and Minnesota is one of the first programs to bring this to life with a national brand,” said Kim Damron, President of Sports Properties at Learfield. “Mark and his team at Gopher Athletics continue to demonstrate leadership in how they approach new opportunities to generate meaningful value for their brand partners, their programs and their student-athletes to support the continued success of Gopher Athletics.”
The agreement was handled through Learfield’s Gopher Sports Properties, the exclusive media rightsholder for Gopher Athletics, along with Learfield’s corporate partnership team.

Gophers Just Crossed A Uniform Line Fans May Not Love
Minnesota football is adding a new look to its helmets this season, and it is one that signals just how far college athletics has drifted into the sponsorship era. The Gophers announced a partnership with Visible, the digital-first wireless carrier powered by Verizon, making it the first helmet bumper sponsor in program history. The logo will appear on the back of every Minnesota helmet starting Sept. 12, another visible reminder of how athletic departments are leaning harder on outside revenue streams.
The move comes as the athletic department also weighs future jersey patch sponsorships while dealing with a budget deficit, a sign the financial pressure is not easing anytime soon. For fans, the helmet addition is the kind of branding step that can feel small in isolation but meaningful in the larger picture, especially for a program trying to balance tradition, aesthetics and the growing cost of running college sports at this level. Gophers Just Crossed A New Branding Line Fans Will Debate
The Gophers are about to take a small but highly visible step into a new era of college sports branding. For the current season, Minnesota football helmets will carry a Visible logo sponsorship sticker on the bottom rear, a placement made possible by a new NCAA rule that now allows commercial logos on equipment. The deal was negotiated by Learfield on behalf of the athletics department, and it extends beyond football with additional branding tied to the schools basketball and hockey programs.
Minnesota will debut the helmet look in its upcoming game against Mississippi State, giving fans their first chance to see how the change lands on the field. For an athletic department trying to keep pace with the financial realities of modern college sports, it is the kind of move that makes business sense even if it invites plenty of debate from supporters who still want their teams gear to look as clean and classic as possible. Why One Outside Voice Is Suddenly High On Minnesota
A national TV voice spent part of the preseason in Minneapolis and came away thinking the Gophers might be capable of more than the usual cautious Big Ten preview talk. CBS analyst Charles Davis said he liked what he saw in Minnesotas practices, pointing to a roster that looks sturdy enough on both sides of the ball to at least put itself in the conversation near the top of the conference.
The lens gets sharper this week with Mississippi State coming to town, because Davis also sees a game that could turn on the line of scrimmage and on how Minnesota handles quarterback Kamario Taylor. His read is that the Gophers have a real opportunity if they can force mistakes and make the Bulldogs pay in the moments where the game tilts, which is exactly the sort of early-season test that can tell you whether the optimism is real.
