Minnesota’s Big Ten opener at Washington could come with a major lift in the backfield.
Gophers running back Darius Taylor is listed as probable for Saturday night’s game, the first availability report of the week showed. Taylor sat out last week’s win over Akron, and his status is the biggest headline among three starters who were also tagged probable.
Linebacker Matt Kingsbury and defensive back Aidan Gousby are the other starters listed as probable.
Center Ashton Beers is questionable after briefly leaving the Akron game because of an injury. Running back Zeke Bates is also questionable as he continues to deal with a leg injury that has lingered since training camp. Defensive back Zahir Rainer is probable.
Minnesota would welcome Taylor back in a hurry. The Gophers managed just 37 rushing yards through three quarters against Akron before breaking loose for 154 yards in the fourth.
Taylor was limited against Mississippi State because of a lower-body injury and has totaled 71 yards on 20 carries this season. TJ Thomas currently leads Minnesota with 173 yards on 23 carries.
Taylor’s value isn’t limited to the run game, either. He has been a reliable target in the passing attack, piling up 103 receptions for 723 yards in his career. In 2024, he led Big Ten running backs with 54 catches.
The availability report also listed several players out: running back Ryan Estrada, defensive back Elisha West, defensive lineman Enoch Atewogbola, offensive lineman Brett Carroll and wide receiver Hayden Moore. All but Moore are out for the season.
The Big Ten’s new conference-game availability system requires four reports each week, beginning three days before kickoff and ending with the final update two hours before game time.

Baranowski filled the stat sheet with seven tackles, 2.0 tackles for loss, 1.0 sack and the first interception of his career, while Drzewiecki stayed perfect on his field goal tries and drilled a career-long 51-yarder.
