P.J. Fleck opens his 10th season with a matchup that looks every bit like a lopsided season opener: Minnesota is a 42½-point favorite over Eastern Illinois when the Gophers kick off Thursday at 7 p.m. at Huntington Bank Stadium.
That number tells the story, but it doesn’t change the assignment for Minnesota. The Gophers enter the 2026 opener riding offseason buzz, a veteran quarterback in Drake Lindsey and a defense headlined by preseason All-America edge rusher Anthony Smith. After back-to-back 8-5 seasons, they’re trying to turn all that steady progress into something bigger.
“This team’s been really fun to coach because whatever you put in front of them, they knock down,” Fleck said. “They’re a really connected team, and everybody keeps using that word. We’re gonna find out how connected.”
Eastern Illinois comes in as an FCS program that went 3-8 last season and finished on a seven-game skid. The Panthers already started their 2026 campaign with a 28-14 win at Murray State on Thursday, getting a passing touchdown and a rushing score from Wisconsin transfer quarterback Cole LaCrue. Minnesota, meanwhile, is meeting an FCS opponent for the third straight year after blasting Rhode Island 48-0 in 2024 and Northwestern State 66-0 last season.
There’s plenty for the Gophers to build on. They’ve won nine straight bowl games, the longest streak in FBS, and seven of those victories have come under Fleck. Minnesota has reached a bowl in seven of his nine seasons, with the exceptions being his 5-7 debut in 2017 and the 3-4 COVID-19 season in 2020, when the team opted out of a bowl.
Smith’s return gives the defense a star power that few teams can match. He announced after the Rate Bowl win over New Mexico that he would come back for his senior year instead of entering the NFL draft.
Last season, the Shippensburg, Pa., native led the Big Ten with 12½ sacks and finished second with 17½ tackles for loss. He needs 10 sacks and 13 tackles for loss this season to become Minnesota’s career leader in both categories.
Lindsey is another major reason for the optimism. In his first year as a starter, he threw for 2,382 yards, 18 touchdowns and six interceptions while completing 63.2% of his passes. His eight wins as a starting quarterback were the most by any freshman in Gophers history, and he enters the opener with an active streak of 153 passes without an interception.
Minnesota’s discipline has also been a calling card under Fleck. The Gophers averaged 3.8 penalties per game last season, fifth-fewest in FBS. In three of the past four years, they’ve averaged fewer than four penalties per game, and they led the nation twice in that category, posting 3.0 per game in 2021 and 3.5 in 2022.
The matchup itself points toward a blowout. Eastern Illinois was picked to finish seventh in the eight-team Ohio Valley Conference, and the expectation is that Minnesota will control the game from the start. The Gophers spent the offseason focused on improving the run game after ranking last in the Big Ten in rushing yards per game last year, and that should be a priority again Thursday.
Running back Darius Taylor is expected to be a central figure early, with freshman Ryan Estrada - a career 7,633-yard rusher in high school - also in line for a look. Lindsey’s deep-ball accuracy has stood out in camp, which could help Minnesota stretch the field for wide receivers Jalen Smith and Javon Tracy.
The prediction here: Gophers 56, Eastern Illinois 7. The betting line says Minnesota should cruise, and everything about this opener points in that direction.
