Cade Tyson is back around the basketball program, even though his eligibility battle is still unresolved.
The latest twist stems from the NCAA’s new age-based eligibility model, the “five-for-five” rule, which was adopted in June. Under that system, college athletes generally get a continuous five-year window to compete, and they can use all five seasons if they want. Traditional redshirts are gone, and most of the waivers that used to stretch eligibility beyond that window are gone too.
That change hit especially hard for members of the 2022 recruiting class who never took a redshirt. If the rule had arrived a little earlier, they would still have another season available. Tyson and several other players from that class took the NCAA to court, arguing they should also be allowed a fifth season under the new model.
For a brief stretch, they had the upper hand. In late July, a federal judge granted a preliminary injunction that allowed Tyson and other similarly situated athletes to chase that extra season. The NCAA pushed back, and in late August the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals temporarily stayed the injunction.
That leaves Tyson in a holding pattern for now: ineligible while the appeal works its way through the system, but back with the program in the meantime.
“We’re excited to have Cade rejoin our program,” head coach Niko Medved said. “We’re here to support him in any way we can through this process and are looking forward to having Cade around the facility and program.”
