Purdue’s introduction of new athletic director Tommy McClelland was supposed to set the tone for a fresh era in West Lafayette. Instead, one line about Indiana turned into the moment everybody kept replaying.
During his introductory press conference on Thursday, McClelland tried to light a spark with Purdue fans by taking a swing at the Hoosiers. “We're here to win championships,” said McClelland. “If you don't want to win championships, go to Indiana”
The reaction was immediate, and not in the way Purdue likely wanted. In the video of the moment, what sounds like a few uncomfortable laughs can be heard after the jab.
The comment drew a wave of criticism online, with fans questioning why he would go there so quickly and whether it was a smart way to begin his tenure.
The Indiana-Purdue rivalry has long been a place where sharp words come easy. When Curt Cignetti was hired just over two years ago, he spent part of his first day at Assembly Hall and told the pro-Hoosier crowd that “Purdue sucks!”
He followed that with, “but so does Michigan and Ohio State!”, which sent the basketball crowd into a frenzy.
McClelland’s attempt at a similar moment, though, landed very differently.
The backdrop makes the line even more noticeable. In both football and basketball, Purdue holds the all-time edge in the head-to-head series.
Indiana basketball fans lean on the five banners hanging at Assembly Hall and wait for Purdue to catch up with an NCAA Tournament title of its own. On the football side, Indiana has surged over the last two seasons, winning last year’s title, while Purdue has not won a conference game since 2023.
So while rival jabs are part of the package, McClelland’s opening shot is already being talked about for all the wrong reasons.
Still, Purdue got the hire completed, and McClelland now has the athletic director job in what the source describes as the best conference in college sports.

The Gophers open the 2026 schedule Sept. 3 against Eastern Illinois at Huntington Bank Stadium, but first they are giving supporters two chances to watch practice on Aug. 7 and Aug. 20 as the next chapter of the program starts to take shape.
Fleck is entering his 10th season in charge, with several key offensive and defensive pieces back from last years team.
