Malik Beasley’s Next Chapter: From NBA Sharpshooter to Puerto Rico’s Hardwood
Malik Beasley was riding high not long ago-lighting it up from deep, setting franchise records, and looking every bit the part of a coveted NBA free agent. But fast-forward to today, and Beasley hasn’t cashed an NBA paycheck since last season. His red-hot momentum came to a screeching halt when his name surfaced in a federal gambling investigation, putting what looked like a lucrative return to Detroit on indefinite hold.
Now, instead of suiting up for an NBA contender or heading overseas, Beasley’s taking his talents to Puerto Rico. He’s signed with the Santurce Crabbers of the Baloncesto Superior Nacional-yes, the same team owned by global music star Bad Bunny.
It’s a surprising turn, but also a strategic one. Playing in Puerto Rico gives Beasley a chance to stay in game shape, stay in the spotlight, and-most importantly-stay visible to NBA teams ahead of this summer’s free agency window. That is, of course, assuming he’s cleared to return.
Beasley’s current situation is a high-stakes waiting game. If the investigation wraps in his favor, he could be back on an NBA roster before long. If not, his days in the league may be behind him.
The allegations date back to his 2023-24 stint with the Milwaukee Bucks, where he quietly put together a strong campaign. Beasley averaged 11.3 points per game while shooting a career-best 41.3% from three.
That performance earned him a deal with the Pistons, where he elevated his game even further-posting 16.3 points per game and knocking down 319 threes, a franchise record. He shot 41.6% from beyond the arc, proving himself as one of the league’s most consistent perimeter threats.
But then came the red flags. According to reports, the scrutiny centers around a January 31 game against Portland, where suspicious betting activity was flagged on the “under” for Beasley’s rebound prop. That game reportedly marked the beginning of the time frame now under investigation.
While the legal process plays out, Beasley is doing what he can to stay relevant-and playing for the Crabbers is a smart move in that regard. His signing made headlines, and it puts him back on the court, where he can remind scouts and GMs what he brings to the table: elite shooting, veteran experience, and the ability to space the floor in a league that thrives on it.
For now, Beasley’s future in the NBA remains uncertain. But he’s not fading quietly. He’s staying ready, staying visible, and betting on himself-this time, the right way.
