Mike McCarthy Gets Brutally Honest On Aaron Rodgers' Future

Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy remains optimistic as he engages in ongoing discussions with Aaron Rodgers, hinting at the quarterback's possible return while the team assesses its options.

In a recent appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy provided some insight into the ongoing discussions with quarterback Aaron Rodgers. McCarthy shared that he maintains regular communication with Rodgers, highlighting the positive nature of their weekly conversations.

"I’ve talked to Aaron regularly and will continue to do so," McCarthy stated. "We’re just working through it.

When it’s time to fully address it, we will. It’s a process he’s going through, and I’m comfortable with it."

While McCarthy didn't make any firm commitments regarding Rodgers' future, the consistent dialogue seems to bode well for the Steelers. Rodgers, who remains unsigned and is contemplating his playing status for the 2026 season, followed a similar pattern last year, staying in touch with the team until he signed in June. This suggests that Pittsburgh might still be in a favorable position to retain him.

The Steelers' current stance, having made no quarterback moves, indicates they might not be urgently seeking a new starter. This could be a sign of confidence in Rodgers' potential return.

However, if Rodgers decides to step away, veteran QB Kirk Cousins could be a viable backup plan. Pittsburgh explored a trade for Cousins last year, and the seasoned quarterback is reportedly waiting for a starting opportunity.

Rodgers, now 42, was initially a first-round pick by the Packers in 2005. His career has been marked by impressive contracts, including a four-year, $134 million extension in 2018 and a subsequent three-year, $150 million deal in 2022. After a brief stint with the Jets, which included an Achilles injury early in the 2023 season, Rodgers found a new home with the Steelers.

In 2025, Rodgers demonstrated his enduring skill, playing 16 games for Pittsburgh and completing 65.7% of his passes for 3,322 yards, 24 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. As fans eagerly await his decision for 2026, the ongoing communication between Rodgers and McCarthy provides a glimmer of hope for Steelers supporters.
