Kyle Kuzma Just Made The Bucks Starting Decision Tougher

Kyle Kuzma makes a statement with his preseason performance, intensifying the competition for the Bucks' starting power forward spot.

Kyle Kuzma gave the Milwaukee Bucks a reminder on the floor that he is not ready to hand over the starting power forward job.

What had looked like a fairly safe bet earlier in the preseason has turned into a real competition, with coach Taylor Jenkins continuing to mix and match his rotations. That included a surprising start for Kel'el Ware in Kuzma's place in game two, a move that put the spotlight squarely on Kuzma heading into Milwaukee’s third preseason game.

He responded in the Bucks’ tough loss to Charlotte with one of the few bright spots for Milwaukee. Kuzma put up 12 points on 4-of-8 shooting, added four rebounds, two assists, and two steals, and slid back into the starting five, at least for the moment. It was a clear step up from his 1-point showing in the opener, even if the numbers themselves don’t scream headline performance.

The bigger story was how he got there. Kuzma ran the floor in transition, attacked the rim, and knocked down a couple of smooth shots from deep.

On the other end, he stayed active with his hands and came away with two steals. The rebounding mattered too, especially for a Bucks team that can use every extra board it can get.

That one game won’t settle anything, and it certainly doesn’t lock Kuzma into the starting role. But it did show him fighting back after the threat of losing the spot became very real.

Ware has been strong throughout the exhibition slate, so another quiet night from Kuzma would have only strengthened Ware’s case. Instead, Jenkins now has more to weigh.

With two preseason games left, Milwaukee still has a few decisions hanging in the balance. The roster logjam is one piece of it, but the starting five is the biggest question mark of all. The rest of the lineup looks largely settled, which makes the power forward battle the one everyone is watching.

It would not be a surprise if both Kuzma and Ware get another start before the preseason ends. Jenkins may want one more look at how each fits alongside the other four starters before making a final call.

For Kuzma, the pressure is obvious. With a starting job and his next contract both in play, he has every reason to treat this battle like it matters.

Bucks Already Have A Bigger Caris LeVert Question Than His Shooting

Milwaukee brought in Caris LeVert this offseason as part of a deal with Detroit that sent Taurean Prince and Gary Harris the other way along with two future second-round picks. On paper, it was the kind of move that gave the Bucks another experienced wing option, but the early returns in preseason have been rough enough to keep the spotlight on something bigger than just his jumper.

LeVert has yet to make a shot or free throw in two exhibition appearances, and the on-court impact has been negative enough to raise a different question for the Bucks. Even so, his presence in training camp has been noticed for the right reasons, with his leadership standing out enough that Milwaukee may still see value in keeping him around if the broader fit proves worthwhile. Bucks Bench Battle Is Creating A Tough Rotation Call For Jenkins

The Bucks have spent the preseason mixing veterans with younger players on the bench, using those minutes as a live audition rather than a settled rotation. Taylor Jenkins has kept changing the combinations to see who fits best, and that has given Milwaukee a better feel for which players can bring efficiency and production when the regular season starts to matter.

Among the names standing out, the rookies have been making a case for themselves, giving the coaching staff something to weigh beyond the usual veteran comfort level. There is a real competition building for those reserve spots, with the Bucks still trying to sort out which bench group can offer the right balance of energy, size and reliability without forcing Jenkins to leave useful pieces on the sideline. Bucks Already Face A Kasparas Jakucionis Backcourt Dilemma

Kasparas Jakucionis has barely gotten his feet wet in the Bucks preseason, and the early usage says plenty about where he stands in the backcourt pecking order. Through Milwaukees first three exhibition games, the young guard has been on the floor sparingly while the team sorts through a crowded group of ball handlers and perimeter players, leaving little immediate room for him to work his way into the rotation.

For a Bucks team that needs to balance present-day depth with long-term development, Jakucionis already looks like a player whose path may not be straightforward. Milwaukee has options to sort through, whether that means making a roster adjustment at guard or finding a way to get him steadier minutes with the Wisconsin Herd so he can keep developing in a real game setting.
