Jaime Jaquez Jr. Is Giving The Bucks A Tough Early Decision

Jaime Jaquez Jr. finds his bid for a contract extension with the Milwaukee Bucks under scrutiny after a lackluster preseason performance raises concerns.

Jaime Jaquez Jr. came into October with something bigger than preseason rhythm on the line. The Bucks forward was facing a real extension audition, and through two exhibition games, it has not gone well.

Milwaukee’s tune-ups are usually about shaking off camp legs and testing combinations, but Jaquez is dealing with a different kind of pressure: a rookie-scale contract extension and a ticking deadline. So far, the results have given the front office little reason to move quickly.

The first test came against Minnesota, where Jaquez spent 18 minutes on the floor and finished with five points on 2-of-7 shooting. He also ended the night at minus-7. If that was supposed to be the throwaway game that got him loose, Wednesday against Oklahoma City only made the picture worse.

Against the Thunder, Jaquez put up 12 shots and made four, finishing with 13 points. He also picked up four quick fouls and was minus-6. Across the two games, he has gone 6-of-19 from the field, a cold 31.5 percent.

The issue is not just the misses. It is the way the misses have looked.

In Miami, Jaquez built his reputation as a rugged mid-post scorer and a smart, useful connector. In these first two preseason games with Milwaukee, that physical edge has looked slowed down and out of sync against wing length.

That matters because the Bucks have a real decision to make. They are trying to figure out whether Jaquez belongs in the $20-plus-million-a-year starting wing conversation or if he profiles more as a premium reserve. If he had come into camp filling it up and making life easy for everyone around him, he might have pushed Milwaukee to get a deal done now rather than risk restricted free agency next summer.

Instead, the early struggles have stalled that momentum. It is still preseason, and that has to be said, but if this keeps up, the Bucks may be comfortable letting the October 19 deadline come and go.

There is still time, and there is still a path for Jaquez to show the connective value that made him appealing in the first place. But with only a couple of exhibition games left, the margin for error is shrinking fast. If he does not turn it around soon, the chance to cash in before opening night could disappear with the deadline.

Ryan Rollins Is Already Forcing A Bucks Backcourt Debate

With the Bucks still reshaping themselves after the Giannis Antetokounmpo trade, the early preseason has already offered a small but telling glimpse into how the backcourt might sort itself out. Ryan Rollins has taken advantage of the opening, playing with a steadier feel and a clear willingness to organize the offense, the kind of early tone-setting that can matter on a roster still learning itself.

Tyler Herro, by contrast, is still searching for his rhythm, and the contrast has been hard to miss in the first exhibition games. Preseason is a thin reed to lean on, especially with so much of the season still ahead, but the Bucks at least have a real discussion forming around who should steer the backcourt first when the games start counting. Brayden Burries Is Forcing A Bucks Rotation Question

Brayden Burries kept making the kind of late-game plays that can change a preseason conversation fast. In Milwaukees win over Oklahoma City, he supplied a burst of scoring in the closing minutes, added rebounds and chipped in on the defensive end, showing the sort of composure and two-way energy that coaches tend to notice when rotation spots are still unsettled.

For a Bucks team still sorting out its bench mix, Burries has at least created a real question. Taylor Jenkins has already pointed to defense as the area that could determine whether the rookie gets more court time, and that makes the next stretch of preseason work especially important. If Burries can keep bringing the same poise while proving he can stay in the right spots defensively, the case for a larger role gets a lot harder to ignore. [Read more 🡒]

Ryan Rollins Is Creating A Bucks Decision That Could Get Costly

Ryan Rollins has quietly put the Bucks in a spot where his next contract could become a much bigger conversation than anyone expected when he first arrived. His recent play has changed the way he is viewed around the league, and for Milwaukee that matters because guard value can move fast once a player starts turning production into leverage.

Golden States decision to lock in Brandin Podziemski on a five-year, $110 million extension only sharpens the picture around Rollins, even if the situations are not identical. Milwaukee does not have to make a move right now, but if Rollins keeps trending the way he has, the Bucks may soon be staring at a price point that looks a lot different from where his career started.
