Giannis Antetokounmpo Out as Bucks Face Criticism Over Controversial Signing

NBA expert slams the Bucks' offseason strategy as costly errors sink their championship ambitions.

The Milwaukee Bucks have hit a rough patch this season, falling short of their championship aspirations in what was expected to be a more open Eastern Conference. Currently sitting at 11th in the standings, their chances of making the play-in tournament are slim.

Giannis Antetokounmpo, a cornerstone of the team, has played only 36 games this season. With the Bucks deciding to sideline him for the rest of the year, the offseason moves intended to bolster the roster around him haven't delivered the desired outcomes.

One of the most talked-about decisions was the choice to waive-and-stretch Damian Lillard, a move that drew considerable criticism. Zach Kram from ESPN even called it the offseason's worst roster decision, especially given the subsequent acquisition of Myles Turner.

Turner joined the Bucks on a four-year deal worth $108.9 million. In hindsight, this decision looks even more questionable, particularly as the Bucks remain financially tied to Lillard, who will cost them $22.5 million annually over the next five years without taking the court. This financial commitment severely restricts their ability to make impactful moves in free agency.

The plan was for Antetokounmpo to form a dynamic duo with Turner, a stretch five known for his rim protection. The Bucks hoped Turner would be an upgrade over Brook Lopez. However, this vision hasn't materialized, and Lopez is now likely playoff-bound with the Los Angeles Clippers.

The gamble to stretch Lillard's contract was always a high-risk play. With Lillard set to return next season and Turner's performance not meeting expectations, the move has proven to be a major setback for Jon Horst and the Bucks' front office.
