Giannis Antetokounmpo’s name has been buzzing in NBA trade rumors for months now, especially with the Milwaukee Bucks stumbling out of the gate this season. And as is often the case when a superstar’s team underperforms, the rumor mill has been working overtime.
One of the more headline-grabbing possibilities? A potential move to the Golden State Warriors to team up with Steph Curry.
But according to recent reports, that scenario isn’t gaining any traction - at least not right now.
Despite the speculation, there’s been no real indication that either side - Giannis or the Warriors - is seriously exploring a blockbuster deal. NBA insider Sam Amick recently poured cold water on the idea, saying there’s just no smoke there.
“Does Giannis want to be in Golden State? I don't have total clarity on that,” Amick noted, “but there's no smoke there to my knowledge.
In fact, I've chatted with some of their core players, and to be clear, the indication was we don't have any reason to think that he's trying to get here.”
That’s a pretty strong statement, especially when it comes from someone plugged into league circles. It also aligns with what we’ve seen publicly - no cryptic tweets, no subtle hints, no “I love it here” comments about San Francisco from Giannis. Just basketball and a lot of noise swirling around him.
There were reports that Giannis requested a trade before the season tipped off, but ultimately, he stayed put. And while he’s still wearing a Bucks jersey, Milwaukee’s early-season struggles have only intensified the chatter. The Bucks currently sit at 11-16, good for 10th in the East - not exactly where you’d expect a team led by a two-time MVP to be this deep into the season.
To make matters more complicated, Giannis hasn’t been fully healthy either. He’s played in just 17 games so far this season, missing time in early December due to a calf injury.
But when he’s been on the floor, he’s still putting up elite numbers: 28.9 points, 10.1 rebounds, and 6.1 assists per game. That’s MVP-level production, even if the team around him hasn’t quite held up its end of the bargain.
And while the trade speculation continues to swirl, it’s clearly wearing on Giannis. According to NBA insider Chris Haynes, the constant rumors have made the Bucks star “uncomfortable.” On a recent episode of The Kevin O’Connor Show, Haynes shared that Giannis told him directly that he’s not behind the trade talk - and that much of it is being fueled by his representatives.
“From the conversation I had with him a week ago, he said he’s not comfortable with all the rumors,” Haynes said. “He claims it’s not coming from him - most of these conversations are coming from his representatives.”
That’s a key distinction. It’s not unusual for agents to float scenarios behind the scenes, whether to apply pressure, test the waters, or simply keep options open. But if Giannis himself isn’t pushing for a move - and there’s no real interest from Golden State - then it’s tough to see a trade materializing anytime soon.
Giannis is still under contract through the 2026-27 season, with a player option the following year. So unless something drastic changes, the Bucks still have time - and leverage - to build around their franchise cornerstone. For now, it looks like both sides are sticking it out, hoping to turn things around before the season slips too far away.
And as for that dream of Giannis in a Warriors jersey? It’s not happening today. Maybe not ever.
