Victor Oladipo’s long shot at an NBA return may be getting a real look.
According to Jake Fischer, the Sacramento Kings are in the market for a veteran point guard and were among the teams that attended one of Oladipo’s recent workouts. They are also the club showing the most interest right now, with Fischer reporting that the Kings could view him as a mentor for Darius Acuff Jr.
For Oladipo, simply getting back in the conversation is meaningful. The former two-time All-Star has spent the last few years trying to claw his way back into the league after a career that once looked headed somewhere far bigger.
In the 2017-18 season, he made the leap from solid role player to full-blown star, putting up 23.1 points per game while leading the Indiana Pacers to the playoffs. That season brought him the Most Improved Player Award, plus All-Defensive First Team and All-NBA Third Team honors.
The next year started well enough, but an injury-plagued second half changed everything. Since then, Oladipo has bounced around the NBA without finding a stable landing spot. Last November, he turned to the Wisconsin Herd, Milwaukee’s G League affiliate, as a way to prove he could still handle high-level competition.
He made that case in a strong 15-game stretch for the Herd, averaging 13.5 points, 4.6 rebounds, 3.8 assists and two steals per game. At the time, there were calls for the Bucks to give him a shot, especially with the team struggling. That never happened, but the work put him back on the radar.
The Bucks, though, have changed dramatically since then. Their roster has shifted away from the veteran-heavy approach they once leaned on, and the team that won the title in 2021 has since been knocked out in back-to-back first-round exits by the younger, faster Indiana Pacers. This summer, Milwaukee is moving in the opposite direction, with only Myles Turner, Kyle Kuzma and Caris LeVert among players aged 30 and older - and all three are trade candidates.
That makes Oladipo an awkward fit at best. He turned 34 recently, and the Bucks are trying to get down to the maximum of 15 standard contracts with a backcourt that is already crowded. There was a plausible case for him as a veteran voice alongside Ryan Rollins and Kevin Porter Jr., but the current roster math points elsewhere.
Even so, Oladipo keeps pushing, and teams are clearly paying attention. After everything he has been through, a comeback would be a remarkable turn - from the peak of 2017-18, through the injury setbacks, and back into the league again.
