Doc Rivers says his coaching days are over, and NBC is the place where he’s making that official.
After parting ways with the Bucks at the end of the 2025/26 season, Rivers said on Bill Simmons’ podcast that he’d be “surprised” if he coached another game. He reinforced that position on Monday when NBC Sports announced he will join the network as a game analyst for the upcoming NBA season.
“I honestly can say I’m absolutely retired,” Rivers told Joe Reedy of The Associated Press. “I had a long run.
It ended up in theHall of Fame and I am so thankful that I was able to coach and played as long as I did. For the first time, I can focus on giving TV my 100% attention, which I’m really looking forward to.”
Rivers had once taken a different path. After retiring as a player in 1996, he turned down NBC’s offer to become an NBA analyst because he wanted to coach. He later worked brief stretches for Turner Sports and ESPN, but the bulk of the last three decades has been spent on NBA sidelines.
That coaching run stretched from 1999 to 2026, with Rivers leading the Magic, Celtics, Clippers, Sixers, and Bucks. He finished with a 1,194-866 regular-season record and a 114-112 playoff mark, and he won an NBA title with Boston in 2008. At 64, he ranks sixth all-time in regular-season wins and fourth in postseason victories.
NBC’s announcement also pointed out just how familiar Rivers already is with the people around him. He has coached five former players who now work as analysts or commentators for the network: Grant Hill, Tracy McGrady, Brian Scalabrine, Jamal Crawford, and his son Austin Rivers.
“With this opportunity, one of the things I thought was I’d love to work with Austin. That would be a lot of fun to be able to work with him,” Doc told Reedy.
“It’s funny when you think about half the staff, I’ve either coached or been the father. I had a fight with (NBC game analyst) Reggie (Miller), which is even funnier.
So it’s pretty cool how connected I am to all the talent.”
