The Toronto Raptors are taking a look at Andre Jackson Jr. as they head toward training camp next month, and the appeal is obvious: they need wing depth, and he brings the kind of defensive energy teams notice fast.
Jackson is trying to win one of the final roster spots in Toronto. The Raptors already have 14 guaranteed contracts on the books, though another opening could emerge if the team makes a trade before the regular season begins. For Jackson, that means the path is there - but it’s narrow.
He enters his fourth NBA season after three years with the Milwaukee Bucks, the team that drafted him in the second round of the 2023 NBA Draft. To get a better read on what Toronto is getting, we spoke with Milwaukee Bucks On SI contributor Tre Allen.
Allen didn’t sugarcoat the Bucks experience. “I thought it was kind of disappointing.
For a player with so much potential, he just couldn’t put it all together on a Bucks team that could’ve used any help they could get. He wasn’t able to develop a consistent three-point shot and he found himself out of the lineup.”
The biggest issue, Allen said, was the shot. “I think it’s because he couldn’t shoot consistently. He did have great athleticism and solid defense and played with energy every night but when defenses don’t look your way and are able to help off, especially on a team like the Bucks with Giannis, it’s hard to find minutes.”
What kept Jackson in the mix was the stuff that shows up before the box score does. “Definitely his athleticism and motor.
What did allow Jackson to get playing time was him playing full-court press defense and trying to be a thorn in someone’s side. He can jump out of the jump and is just an athletic freak.”
The offensive production, though, has lagged behind. “His shooting ability and lack of offence. He only averaged 2.7 points in his career and shot 25 per cent from three last season.”
Even with those limitations, Allen sees a player who could still carve out a role if the jumper comes around. “I would say yes.
He’s got the athleticism and it’s clear he’s adopted a defensive mentality. If he can develop a catch-and-shoot three or just show the ability to make them consistently even if it’s 1-2 a game, I think he can be a solid rotational player.”
That’s the assignment for Jackson in Toronto: prove the defense is real, then do enough on offense to stay on the floor. The Raptors are giving him a chance because of what he can do on that end, but he’ll need visible growth with the ball to turn the opportunity into a roster spot.
