The Milwaukee Bucks have time on their side when it comes to Jaime Jaquez Jr., but the clock is still ticking.
A wave of 2023 NBA Draft classmates have already landed fresh extensions, yet Jaquez is not among them. There may be conversations happening behind closed doors, but nothing has surfaced publicly. That matters less than the calendar, at least for now: the rookie extension deadline is Oct. 19, so Milwaukee and Jaquez still have room to work something out.
The fit is obvious enough that one Bucks executive told Spotrac’s Keith Smith earlier this offseason that the team would love to get a deal done with Jaquez. That’s not exactly a shocking line from a front office, but it does line up with the idea that Milwaukee views him as a possible part of the future in this new Giannis Antetokounmpo-less era.
Still, the better short-term move might be patience on Jaquez’s side. After the best season of his career, his current extension value would likely land in the four-year, $80 million range, based on his standing as a second-unit spark plug. But if he’s stepping into a starting role in Milwaukee and takes another jump, he could push well past $100 million on his next deal.
There’s no downside to wanting security now. A deal in that range would be the biggest payday of his young career, and nobody would blame him for locking it in. At the same time, betting on himself has worked for plenty of players before, and Jaquez would not be the first to delay and cash in later.
For now, the silence since Smith’s July 23 report suggests this one may wait until next summer.
If Jaquez does decide to play out the moment, he’ll have plenty of examples from his 2023 draft class to keep in front of him. Victor Wembanyama, the No. 1 pick, landed a $252 million contract.
Amen Thompson and Ausar Thompson made history as the first brothers in NBA history to sign $100 million-plus contracts, with one getting $208 million and the other $155 million. Keyonte George agreed to a $157.5 million extension, and Brandon Miller appears next in line with the Hornets.
Jaquez is not in that tier, and he likely wouldn’t be paid like those players even if he signs now. But the message is clear: production gets rewarded. With a clean slate in Milwaukee, he has a real chance to turn that into generational wealth.
