As the NBA trade deadline came and went on Thursday afternoon, a few big names stayed exactly where they were-most notably, Giannis Antetokounmpo. The Bucks made it clear to rival teams in the hours leading up to the deadline that the two-time MVP wasn’t going anywhere. And while plenty of chatter surrounded other stars, many of them stayed put as well, either due to asking prices, contract concerns, or a lack of serious suitors.
Ja Morant: Available, but No Takers (For Now)
One of the more intriguing storylines was the Grizzlies’ willingness to move Ja Morant. The two-time All-Star had reportedly been on the market for at least a month, and Memphis even lowered its asking price in hopes of finding a trade partner. Still, no deal materialized.
According to league sources, the Grizzlies were seeking a first-round pick in return for Morant. But that price proved too steep-especially considering Morant’s injury history and the weight of his contract, which runs through the 2027-28 season on a max deal.
That kind of financial commitment gave teams pause. As one league insider put it, “You’re committing to several years, and if it doesn’t work, you’re probably carrying that contract until it’s an expiring at least.”
Teams like the Kings, Bucks, Heat, and Timberwolves reportedly showed interest, but none got close to making a serious offer. Miami, for example, was only willing to part with expiring contracts and second-round picks. So while the Grizzlies explored their options, they’ll now pivot to the offseason, where Morant’s trade market could look different depending on how the rest of the year unfolds.
Clippers Make Noise, But Kawhi Stays Put
The Clippers were one of the few teams to actually shake things up. They pulled off a pair of significant trades-sending James Harden to Cleveland in exchange for Darius Garland and dealing Ivica Zubac to Indiana. The return from the Pacers included two first-round picks, a second-rounder, and young talents Bennedict Mathurin and Isaiah Jackson.
Still, the one name that won’t be moving is Kawhi Leonard. Despite speculation, the Clippers made it clear they’re keeping their All-Star forward as they look to stay competitive in the Western Conference.
Kings Hold Their Ground
Sacramento was active in discussions, especially around Domantas Sabonis, who had been linked to the Raptors in recent weeks. But according to multiple sources, those talks fizzled out and never gained serious traction. Sabonis, a two-time All-NBA selection, will remain with the Kings.
The Kings also explored potential moves involving Zach LaVine, DeMar DeRozan, and Malik Monk, but again, nothing materialized. Whether that was due to price tags, fit, or timing, Sacramento ultimately decided to ride with its current core.
Other Notable Names Staying Put
Several other players who were the subject of trade speculation will also stay with their current teams. That list includes:
- Jarrett Allen (Cavaliers)
- Lauri Markkanen (Jazz)
- LaMelo Ball (Hornets)
- Zion Williamson, Trey Murphy III, and Herbert Jones (Pelicans)
Each of these players had varying degrees of interest around the league, but none were moved before the 2:00 p.m. CT deadline.
What’s Next?
While the deadline didn’t deliver blockbuster movement for some of the league’s biggest names, the groundwork has been laid for what could be a busy offseason. Teams like Memphis may revisit talks, and others could reevaluate their rosters based on how the playoff picture shakes out.
For now, the focus shifts to the stretch run. With rosters largely set, it’s time to see which teams can make the most of what they’ve got-and which ones may have missed a chance to shake things up.
