Bucks Roster Crunch Could Open A Bigger Role For Brayden Burries

Could a trade involving Kevin Porter Jr. pave the way for Brayden Burries to assume a key role with the Milwaukee Bucks this season?

The Milwaukee Bucks may be staring at a roster squeeze, and Kevin Porter Jr. looks like one of the pieces most likely to move. According to NBA insider Jake Fischer, the Bucks have to trim two standard contracts before the season, and Porter is among the players being considered in trade talks.

If Milwaukee does deal him, the ripple effect could be immediate for Brayden Burries. Porter’s exit would clear a spot, but it would also open a lane for Burries to matter in a much bigger way. The Bucks would be looking for someone to steady the second unit, and based on what Burries has already shown since arriving in Milwaukee, he’s positioned to step into that role.

That’s what makes Porter such a useful trade chip. He can help a team, but he also checks a lot of boxes for Milwaukee: he has value around the league, he carries a workable salary, and he’s part of a crowded backcourt. Moving him could give the Bucks not only roster relief, but also a chance to bring back some draft compensation while creating more minutes for younger players whose roles are still unsettled.

Porter hasn’t done much to stand out in preseason, at least so far. He has played a limited role in two games, averaging 6.5 points while shooting 16.7 percent from the field.

Even so, teams know what he can bring. When healthy in a short breakout stretch with Milwaukee last season, he showed he can score and also made real progress as a playmaker.

That kind of profile should still appeal to a contender looking for bench help. Porter can give a second unit a jolt and help organize the reserves, which makes him a logical trade target for a team that needs guard depth without paying a huge price.

What Milwaukee would get back is still the open question. A straight-up deal is one possibility.

Another is whether the Bucks try to bundle Porter with Jericho Sims or Caris LeVert, both of whom Fischer said are also trade candidates. Since Milwaukee still has to create at least one more opening, a package move would make plenty of sense.

Whatever the return ends up being, the bigger story might be what happens next for Burries. If Porter is moved, the Bucks would be signaling real confidence in Burries to take on a larger workload. And that could let him get rolling right away.

Hornets Face A Tough Roster Call Before Opening Night

With opening night getting closer, the Bucks have been active in the kind of roster housekeeping that can shape the last spots on the depth chart. Milwaukee has held exploratory talks with the Lakers on a potential Jericho Sims-Dalton Knecht deal, and the possibility of waiving Knecht if the trade never comes together is part of the backdrop as the team keeps sorting through its final moves. At the same time, the Bucks are also weighing other trade possibilities involving Caris LeVert and Kevin Porter Jr. while trying to hold onto Pete Nance.

For Milwaukee, the bigger picture is less about one name than about how the end of the roster fits around the rotation once the season begins. Other teams across the league, including the Grizzlies, Hornets, Mavericks and Clippers, are still evaluating their own roster decisions too, which adds to the late-summer churn. The Bucks may not be done making calls, and the next move could hinge on whether they can turn one of these discussions into a cleaner fit before the regular season starts. [Read more 🡒]

Bucks Just Turned Their Home Opener Into A Milwaukee Sports Event

The Bucks are giving Milwaukee fans a rare doubleheader feel to start the season, moving their Oct. 23 home opener against the Bulls from 7 p.m. ET to 4 p.m. ET. For a market that wears its teams proudly, it is the kind of scheduling concession that turns a routine opener into part of a bigger civic moment. The Bucks are clearly embracing the idea of sharing the spotlight, even if the arrangement leaves one of the nights biggest basketball questions hanging until the teams actually tip off. Bucks Young Core Is Creating A New Question About Their Future

The Bucks young core is already drawing attention beyond Milwaukee, with the leagues annual General Manager survey singling out rookies Brayden Burries, Nate Ament and Kasparas Jakucionis as some of the biggest draft steals. Burries picked up the most votes for the biggest steal, while Ament and Jakucionis also landed on the list, a sign that around the NBA there is real curiosity about how this group might fit into the Bucks next phase.

What makes the recognition more interesting is the backdrop of a new coach in Taylor Jenkins, who now has a fresh set of options to mold as the franchise tries to balance immediate expectations with long-term development. For a team that has lived in the pressure of win-now basketball, the emergence of Burries, Ament and Jakucionis raises a different kind of question, one that could shape how Milwaukee looks not just this season but for years to come.
