The buzz around Brayden Burries is already loud in Milwaukee, and one comparison in particular has only turned the volume up: Jrue Holiday.
NBA.com pointed to Holiday as a player Burries resembles, and for the Bucks, that kind of company is exactly the sort of thing that gets the imagination going. Holiday has spent much of his career in the shadow of bigger names, but the impact has never been hard to see.
He’s been the steady hand, the stopper, the guy who can score when the moment demands it and do the dirty work when the game gets ugly. Two championship rings back that up.
That’s the standard Burries is being measured against, and it’s easy to see why the fit makes sense on paper. The rookie combo guard brings a sturdy frame and the kind of defensive versatility that turned heads in college.
At 6-foot-4 and 215 pounds, he has the size to bother smaller guards and enough strength to hold his own against forwards, just like Holiday at 6-foot-4, 220 pounds. That matters in the NBA, where being able to guard multiple spots can change the shape of a lineup.
The offensive parallels are there too. Burries and Holiday can both score at all three levels, and both can slide between leading the offense and playing without the ball.
That’s the kind of guard every good team wants around its stars. In Milwaukee, that means Tyler Herro and Ryan Rollins should benefit from having Burries as an off-ball option next to them, the way Giannis Antetokounmpo has benefited from Holiday’s presence in the past.
There’s also the energy piece. Burries has shown flashes of that Holiday-like motor when he isn’t directing traffic, crashing the glass and sprinting the floor to give his team a lift. That’s part of what makes the comparison feel so enticing.
Nobody is pretending Burries will arrive next season and instantly look like Jrue Holiday. But the tools are there, and over time he could grow into that conversation.
If he does, it would be a huge win for a Bucks team trying to change the story around its draft history over the last decade or so. For now, it’s enough to know the excitement is real, and the Burries era already has people dreaming big.
