The Milwaukee Bucks appear to have settled on a path for Malique Lewis, and it points away from Milwaukee for now.
Selected with the 60th pick in this past draft, Lewis was always viewed as a draft-and-stash candidate. That idea is now taking shape, with ESPN’s Olgun Uluc reporting that Lewis is nearing an agreement with the Cairns Taipans that would keep him overseas this season.
“Malique Lewis is nearing a deal with the Cairns Taipans, sources told ESPN. Discussions between the Trinidadian forward and Taipans are in the advanced stages; there’s confidence a deal will soon be agreed for #NBL27. Lewis would be an import, and Cairns’ final roster spot.”
For Milwaukee, the move fits the reality of an overcrowded roster. The Bucks currently have 17 players on standard contracts, even though only 15 are allowed once the regular season starts.
With that kind of squeeze, Lewis was facing a steep climb to land one of those spots. Unless he delivered something eye-catching in Summer League - and he didn’t - this outcome was always the likely one.
There’s a clear upside to sending him overseas. Instead of sitting on the end of the bench without meaningful NBA minutes, Lewis should get a real chance to play, develop, and sharpen his game. The Bucks have already seen that blueprint work with Bogoljub Markovic, who earned MVP honors after making major strides overseas last season before signing a four-year deal with Milwaukee this summer.
That’s the model Lewis will be asked to follow now. If he can make the same kind of leap, there could be a place for him in Milwaukee next year as the Bucks continue to prioritize youth development.
Even with Lewis seemingly headed abroad, the Bucks still have a messy roster situation to sort through. More cutdowns are coming, and at least two players on standard contracts will have to move on. Pete Nance stands out as a likely candidate, despite his emergence last season, but beyond that, nothing is settled.
Markovic looks secure after his four-year agreement, and the quartet acquired in the Giannis Antetokounmpo trade also appears likely to stay. If the Bucks end up using sign-and-trade moves, that could be another way to get under the legal limit.
However the rest of the summer shakes out, one thing is clear: Malique Lewis is not part of Milwaukee’s immediate plans. For now, the best move for everyone is the one that gives him the most room to grow.

Bucks Trade Focus Just Sparked A Real Roster Fit Debate
With Peyton Watson off the board, the Bucks trade attention has started to tilt toward a different tier of young talent, and Jonathan Kuminga and Bennedict Mathurin have suddenly become the names worth watching. Milwaukee has the assets to chase either player, which keeps the door open, but the real question is no longer simply whether the Bucks can make a move. It is whether the move actually solves something on a roster that already has plenty of guards.
Mathurin brings obvious appeal as a scorer and a player with room to grow, but that same profile is why his fit is under such close scrutiny in Milwaukee. The Bucks have to weigh upside against lineup balance, and with guard depth already part of the picture, adding another one is not a clean answer. That makes the decision more complicated than a straightforward talent grab, and it is the kind of roster debate that can shape how aggressively Milwaukee chooses to act next. [Read more 🡒]
Former Bucks Guard Is Getting Another Chance And Reopening Old Frustration
The Kings are digging through the veteran guard market again after Russell Westbrooks retirement, and Cam Payne is right in the mix with a workout on the schedule as part of that evaluation process. Sacramento is also looking at other experienced options such as Victor Oladipo and Elfrid Payton, a sign the team is taking a broad approach to bolstering its backcourt depth before making a move.
For Bucks fans, Paynes name still brings back a familiar kind of frustration. His stint in Milwaukee during the 2023-24 season was brief, but it was enough to leave an impression, and now he is back in the conversation for another NBA opportunity. Whether Sacramento sees him as a fit could determine if one of those old what-ifs gets another chapter. [Read more 🡒]
Pelicans Face A Brutal 2030 Warning About Where This Is Headed
By the time the league reaches 2030, The Sporting News future NBA power rankings see a very different landscape, and it is not a flattering one for Milwaukee. The projection has the Bucks, Golden State Warriors and New Orleans Pelicans clustered at the bottom of the league, a reflection of how quickly NBA fortunes can shift when aging cores, roster control and asset management start to catch up with a franchise.
For Milwaukee, the warning is less about one bad season than about the long road ahead. The Bucks are being weighed down by limited draft assets and salary cap constraints, two factors that can make a reset harder than it looks on paper. In a league where flexibility often matters as much as talent, that combination leaves plenty of room for concern about how the next era will unfold. [Read more 🡒]
