The Milwaukee Bucks are in a spot where chasing upside makes a lot more sense than chasing certainty, and Ryan Dunn fits that idea cleanly. After trading Giannis Antetokounmpo, Milwaukee’s path should be about stockpiling young talent and finding out which players can grow into something real. Dunn, who was on the Bucks’ radar before the 2024 NBA Draft but ultimately went to Phoenix instead of Milwaukee’s pick of AJ Johnson, belongs on that list.
Dunn’s first two seasons with the Suns have done little to change the scouting report that followed him out of college. He’s a strong defender and a solid rebounder, but the offensive issues are still very much there. He has averaged 6.4 points for his career, with most of that production coming around the basket, and his 48.8 percent free throw mark is hard to miss.
There’s also a real path to Dunn becoming available. Valley of the Suns expert Luke Duffy predicts Dunn will be gone by the trade deadline, and that idea isn’t hard to understand given Phoenix’s crowded forward group. Miles Bridges, Dillon Brooks, Rasheer Fleming, Koa Peat, and Haywood Highsmith all sit in front of him in some form or fashion, and that makes consistent minutes far from guaranteed.
Bridges and Brooks are the safest bets to play, but the rest of that group leaves plenty of room for shifting roles. Fleming has been labeled by many as one of last year’s draft steals, so Phoenix may want to get him on the floor sooner.
The Suns also traded into the first round of this year’s draft to take Peat, which tells you they have real confidence in him. If Dunn still isn’t showing much progress, the phone could start ringing.
For Milwaukee, the fit is obvious. The Bucks’ forward room includes Ousmane Dieng, Kyle Kuzma, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Nate Ament, and Bogoljub Markovic, which gives them a mix of rookies, a project player, and veterans on expiring deals. That kind of group leaves the future wide open, and depth could matter a lot.
Dunn would give the Bucks a chance to cover a hole they should have addressed in the draft in the first place. And with Taylor Jenkins in place, Milwaukee has a development-minded voice who could help see what Dunn can become. There’s no guarantee Phoenix actually shops him before the deadline, but if they do, the Bucks should be ready to make the call.
