The Milwaukee Bucks are still in the Jonathan Kuminga conversation, but the clearest momentum right now appears to be heading Cleveland’s way.
Among the teams most often tied to the free-agent forward, the Atlanta Hawks, Cleveland Cavaliers, Los Angeles Lakers and Bucks have all come up repeatedly. But according to The Athletic’s Dan Woike, the Cavaliers are the team most closely linked to Kuminga at the moment, while the Lakers’ pursuit has cooled.
Los Angeles had looked like the strongest threat for a while, but Woike reported that the Lakers have put things on pause because they do not want to part with major draft capital for him. Atlanta, meanwhile, may be more open to moving on after bringing in Lu Dort from the OKC Thunder. That leaves Cleveland and Milwaukee as the names to watch.
For the Bucks, the level of real interest is harder to pin down. Marc Stein reported on July 2 that Milwaukee was looking into Kuminga, but since then there has been very little noise connecting the team to him.
That could mean the Bucks checked in and stepped back. It could also mean they are waiting for Kuminga to make the next move.
“The Lakers obviously face financial constraints but league sources say they continue to explore the feasibility of adding Jonathan Kuminga to fill a wing need.
Cleveland and Milwaukee have also expressed Kuminga interest and a return to Atlanta has not been ruled out.”
Whatever the case, if Milwaukee wants to land Kuminga, it may need to make a more aggressive push than Cleveland is making right now.
There is also another forward drawing Bucks interest: Peyton Watson. Multiple outlets have reported Milwaukee as one of several teams involved in a possible sign-and-trade with the Denver Nuggets. Watson would be the more eye-catching addition, and that may help explain why Kuminga chatter around Milwaukee has gone quiet.
The Bucks do need another forward to round out the roster, and Watson may be the bigger priority at the moment. If he ends up staying in Denver or landing elsewhere, Milwaukee could turn back up the heat on Kuminga. If the Bucks get a real chance to pry Watson away from Denver, they may put Kuminga on the back burner.
For now, the Cavaliers look like the team in front. The Bucks are still lurking, but they do not appear to be leading the race.

Across five games, the young forward showed steady improvement, averaging 11 points and 5 rebounds while shooting it well enough to suggest theres a real offensive base to build from as he heads toward his rookie season.
The most encouraging part was how the production kept trending up, capped by a strong outing against the Hornets that hinted at more than just flashes.
