Malique Lewis looks set to keep his game in Australia, with the 21-year-old forward nearing a deal with the Cairns Taipans, according to Olgun Uluc of ESPN. Uluc reported that talks are in advanced stages and that the expectation is the two sides will get an agreement done.
Lewis has spent the last two seasons with the South East Melbourne Phoenix, and if the move becomes official, he’ll be back in the NBL for the 2026/27 season. In that scenario, Milwaukee would retain his NBA rights while he opens the year as a draft-and-stash player.
The 6’8″ forward from Trinidad and Tobago was the final pick in this year’s NBA draft. The Bucks acquired the No. 60 overall selection from Orlando for cash, then completed the move in a three-team deal that also involved Washington.
Lewis played 25 games in Australia’s 2025/26 National Basketball League season and put up 7.1 points, 4.3 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.2 steals in 21.3 minutes per game. He shot .455 from the field, .387 from three and .800 at the line.
Before the 2026 draft, ESPN ranked Lewis 66th on its big board. He helped his stock with a strong showing at the adidas EuroCamp in June, which led to several NBA workouts.
After that, he was medically cleared by the NBA’s fitness-to-play panel, following a heart condition that kept him out of the G League combine earlier in the spring. That condition had been known and documented for several years.

Bucks Forward Pursuit Just Took A Turn That Changes Everything
The Bucks search for help on the wing just hit a setback, with one of the names tied to their forward plans no longer available. Milwaukee had been looking at ways to add a versatile piece to bolster its frontcourt depth, and the market for that kind of player has been moving quickly as teams sort through sign-and-trade possibilities and cap mechanics.
Now the focus appears to be shifting to another target with a much different path to a deal. Jonathan Kuminga remains on Milwaukees radar as discussions continue around a possible sign-and-trade, and the Bucks do have a trade exception that could help them structure something workable. The appeal is obvious, but the details on what it would cost and whether the pieces line up have yet to be settled. [Read more 🡒]
Nate Ament Suddenly Has A Real Bucks Minutes Problem
The Bucks forward picture has gotten a lot less settled, and that alone makes the coming months worth watching for Nate Ament. With Peyton Watson gone to Cleveland, Milwaukee suddenly has room on the wing and in the frontcourt for someone to carve out a role, especially with Jaime Jaquez Jr., Ousmane Dieng, Kyle Kuzma, Pete Nance and Bogoljub Markovic all part of the mix. For a rookie like Ament, that kind of opening can be just as important as talent, because minutes are often decided as much by opportunity as by pedigree.
Still, opportunity does not guarantee a clean path. The backup-forward battle figures to be crowded, and Ament is the sort of player who could be pushed into a long competition for a bench spot rather than being handed one outright. Taylor Jenkins reputation for player development helps make the situation more appealing for a young player trying to grow, but the real question is how quickly Ament can turn camp reps into a rotation case.
