The Milwaukee Bucks are about to get their own answer on Kel’el Ware.
For much of Ware’s time with the Miami Heat, the big man didn’t exactly look like a player who had been handed a long leash. He spent stretches on the court, but not nearly as many as his talent profile seemed to suggest he should. And around him, the tone from Erik Spoelstra kept drifting negative.

Now Ware is in Milwaukee, and that changes the test. In theory, he should get a cleaner shot at regular NBA minutes than he did with the Heat. That puts the Bucks in the middle of a simple question: was Spoelstra seeing the real thing, or was this just a bad fit?
Coming out of the draft, Ware looked like the kind of gamble teams dream on. He had the size, the frame, and the kind of wingspan that can turn a center into a real shot-blocking presence. He also brought a three-point shot, which gave Miami a way to use him in different spots offensively.
But the opportunity never really matched the promise. Ware’s run in Miami was marked by limited chances, and at times he was even pulled from games. The concerns around effort and energy kept surfacing, and that’s exactly the kind of background the Bucks will now have to sort through.
If those same issues follow him to Milwaukee, the optics won’t be great. It would mean this is the second team to come away with complaints about his low effort and low energy, and at that point the blame would start to land on Ware himself.
If he arrives and plays well, though, the story changes fast. Then the possibility opens that this was less about a player failing and more about a coach and player never quite clicking.
Spoelstra is one of the greatest coaches of all time, but even great coaches and talented players don’t always mesh. Maybe Ware just needed a different setting.
