Pat Murphy was trying to answer a routine playoff question when the game ripped the microphone away from him.
Early in Tuesday’s NLDS Game 3 at Petco Park, the Brewers manager was speaking live with FS1 sideline reporter Tom Verducci while Milwaukee and San Diego were still scoreless. Verducci asked about the Brewers’ approach at the plate, and Murphy started into his response just as Sal Frelick sent a ball driving toward the gap in center field.
For a moment, it looked like a clean extra-base hit. Then Padres center fielder Jackson Merrill got there, slid, and made the catch.
Murphy’s answer turned into a sideline eruption in real time. He said the Brewers had been “a little antsy,” then cut himself off and shouted, “Get it in the gap, Sal. God dammit, Merrill,” as the play was completed.
The broadcast then returned to the booth with Adam Amin, Adam Wainwright and A.J. Pierzynski, who laughed as the cameras cut back to Murphy in the dugout watching the play unfold. FOX Sports: MLB later posted the clip on social media.
The catch was more than just a viral moment. San Diego used it as part of a 4-3 win that kept the Padres alive and extended the series after Milwaukee had been trying to close things out. Merrill also added to the night later on, delivering a single and a stolen base in a Padres rally, according to the same report.
The scene landed against the backdrop of a tense October night at Petco, where highlight-reel defense has been part of the story. Merrill’s robbery of Frelick became the one that interrupted the interview and stole the spotlight.

William Contreras Just Put Brewers Fans On Notice About His Future
William Contreras has been at the center of Milwaukees NLDS push against the Padres, giving the Brewers the kind of middle-order production that can change a short series in a hurry. He delivered important home runs in Games 1 and 3, a reminder of just how much value he has brought since arriving in Milwaukee in 2022, when he quickly established himself as one of the clubs most durable everyday players with more than 140 games played each season.
For a Brewers team that has leaned on him heavily, the longer-view conversation now matters almost as much as the October at-bats. Contreras said in an interview that he will be a free agent after the 2027 season unless he signs an extension, and he acknowledged some uncertainty about whether his future will remain in Milwaukee. For a fan base that has grown used to seeing him in the lineup and in the middle of big moments, it is the kind of update that keeps the attention on what he does now while quietly raising the question of what comes next. Pat Murphy's Game 4 Pitching Choice Could Decide The Brewers' Season
After dropping the first three games of the National League Division Series, the Brewers are staring at a Game 4 decision that could shape the tone of the rest of their October. Pat Murphy has not announced a starter yet, and the question around who gets the ball has become one of the most important calls left on Milwaukees board.
Robert Gasser and Chad Patrick are both in the mix, with Kyle Harrisons role still unclear after some uneven recent work. Gasser has trended up lately, while Patrick has been mostly effective aside from one rough outing late in the season, giving Murphy a pair of very different options as he tries to keep Milwaukee alive. Brewers Face One Huge Game 4 Decision With Season On Line
The Brewers season has reached the point where every choice carries outsized weight, and after a 4-3 loss to the Padres in Game 3 of the National League Division Series, they are now staring at a Game 4 that can either extend the ride or end it. San Diego will go with right-hander Walker Buehler, a pitcher who has yet to appear this postseason but brings plenty of October experience, which only sharpens the pressure on Milwaukees side to answer in kind.
Pat Murphy has not yet named a starter, leaving the club to work through its options before making what amounts to a season-shaping call. The Brewers have already seen how narrow this series can be, and with the Padres set and Milwaukee still deciding, the next move will say plenty about how Murphy wants to attack a must-win game.
