The United States fell just short in the World Baseball Classic championship, narrowly losing to Team Venezuela, who clinched their first title. For American fans, the defeat was a tough pill to swallow, especially given the impressive roster Team USA assembled.
Despite the talent, Team USA's offense struggled in the title game, save for a two-run homer from Bryce Harper in the eighth inning. This lack of offensive firepower was a recurring theme throughout the tournament's elimination rounds. After pool play, the U.S. managed only nine runs in three games, a surprising stat considering the lineup was filled with prolific hitters and perennial All-Stars.
Players like Alex Bregman, Byron Buxton, Cal Raleigh, Will Smith, Bobby Witt Jr., and even Harper, until his late-game heroics, had underwhelming performances. When it mattered most, Team USA couldn’t find the runs they needed.
However, Milwaukee Brewers' rising star, Brice Turang, was a bright spot for Team USA. From his debut on March 6, where he notched two doubles and four RBIs, to being the only player to hit off Venezuela's Eduardo Rodriguez in the final, Turang consistently delivered. His standout performance earned him a spot on the 2026 World Baseball Classic All-Tournament Team.
Turang was one of four Americans to make the All-Tournament team and one of just two position players from Team USA to receive this honor. Playing in six of the seven WBC games, he collected eight hits in 22 at-bats, boasting a .364/.391/.545 slash line and a .936 OPS. He led the team in doubles and was third in RBIs, also stealing multiple bases.
Turang's efforts were recognized not only by fans but also by his peers and coaches. USA manager Mark DeRosa frequently praised Turang's performance, and teammates Byron Buxton and Kyle Schwarber expressed their admiration for his talent.
Brewers fans are already familiar with Turang's capabilities, having witnessed his power surge with 10 homers last August and his defensive prowess, earning him the National League's Platinum Glove. Now, after his stellar international performance, the baseball world is taking notice of this emerging star.
