Brewers' Bullpen Moves: Setting the Stage for Opening Day
The Milwaukee Brewers have made some strategic decisions as they finalize their Opening Day roster. Left-handed pitchers Shane Drohan and Robert Gasser have been optioned to Triple-A Nashville, opening the door for right-handed reliever Easton McGee to claim the final spot on the 26-man roster. This move, unless the Brewers bring in someone from outside the organization, sets McGee up for a key role as the season kicks off.
The decision to go with McGee isn't surprising. As a right-hander, he complements a bullpen already rich with left-handed talent, including Aaron Ashby, Jared Koenig, Ángel Zerpa, and DL Hall.
McGee's ability to pitch more than three outs in relief gives the Brewers flexibility, although he's not in line to start games like Drohan and Gasser. This means the southpaws will continue to hone their skills in Nashville, ready to step up if starters Kyle Harrison or Brandon Woodruff aren't available early in the season.
While developing Drohan and Gasser as starters isn't the immediate focus, keeping them stretched out in Triple-A aligns with the Brewers' long-term plans. Both pitchers have the potential to emerge as starters later this year or next, and their progression is something the team is keenly watching.
McGee finds himself in the eighth spot of a bullpen that features a mix of talent. Joining him are high-leverage pitchers Trevor Megill and Abner Uribe, along with sidearm specialist Grant Anderson.
Brewers manager Pat Murphy has expressed a desire for another reliable right-handed arm, especially after losing Craig Yoho to injury. While there's always a chance Milwaukee could pick up a pitcher from another team's roster cuts, McGee is poised to start the season in a role that may see plenty of changes throughout the year.
As the Brewers gear up for the season, the focus remains on balancing immediate needs with long-term development. McGee's inclusion in the bullpen is a testament to this strategy, providing depth and versatility as the team navigates the early weeks of the season.
