The Brewers made a small but unusual move Thursday afternoon, landing Jonathan Ornelas from the Athletics for cash considerations.
Milwaukee reportedly intends to add Ornelas to the roster right away, and he is expected to be active that evening against the Dodgers, according to Adam McCalvy of MLB.com. To make room, the Brewers will designate Jihwan Bae for assignment.
What makes this deal stand out is the timing. Ornelas had been with the A’s just last week, which is not the normal path for a player in August.
Once a player has already been selected to a 40-man roster, he usually can’t be traded after the deadline passed on August 3. But Ornelas had been designated for assignment and chose free agency earlier this week, then returned to the A’s on a minor league deal.
Because he was not on a 40-man roster under that new contract, he was eligible to be dealt.
Ornelas, 26, got into six games for Oakland and went 2-for-12 with seven strikeouts. The bat has been better at Triple-A this season, where he’s split time between the Yankees and A’s affiliates and put up a 128 wRC+ with 11 home runs and 11 stolen bases in 81 games.
Offense has never really been the selling point for Ornelas, even in the minors, and that’s not what Milwaukee is chasing here. The Brewers are looking at the glove.
He has played every infield position except first base in the majors and has also seen occasional time in the outfield. Across those spots, he has generally graded as a neutral defender or better, with second base being the lone exception.
