Brewers Linked to Dominican Winter League Standout in Exciting New Deal

The Milwaukee Brewers bolster their pitching prospects by signing Dominican Winter League standout Joe Corbett, showcasing their commitment to unearthing and developing hidden gems.

The Milwaukee Brewers have a knack for uncovering talent in unexpected places, and their latest signing is no exception. Known for their ability to transform overlooked players into big-league contributors, the Brewers have once again tapped into the independent leagues to bolster their roster.

Recently, Milwaukee inked a deal with right-handed reliever Joe Corbett, following his impressive stint in the Dominican Winter League (LIDOM). Corbett, who didn’t snag an invite to the big-league camp, showcased his skills with a standout 1.90 ERA over 22 appearances, striking out 27 batters in just 23.2 innings.

Originally drafted by the Texas Rangers in the 10th round of the 2019 MLB Draft, Corbett’s college career was split between Arkansas-Little Rock and West Texas A&M. His final collegiate season was a highlight reel, boasting a 2.44 ERA in 14 starts and amassing 136 strikeouts over 92.1 innings, a performance that caught the Rangers' attention.

Transitioning to a reliever in the Rangers’ system, Corbett made an immediate impact in 2019 with a stellar 1.48 ERA and a 0.78 WHIP across 19 appearances. However, the cancellation of the 2020 minor league season due to the pandemic stalled his momentum. In 2021, he started strong with the Low-A Down East Wood Ducks, but struggled after moving up to High-A Hickory.

The 2022 season mirrored his previous challenges, as Corbett began well in High-A but faced hurdles following a promotion to Double-A. By 2023, he pivoted to the independent leagues, also spending time in the Mexican League and LIDOM, where he experienced mixed results.

Corbett’s recent winter league performance caught the Brewers' attention, and they see potential in his pitching arsenal. His return to affiliated baseball with Milwaukee’s minor league system marks a new chapter, and he’s certainly a name to watch. If successful, Corbett will be another testament to the Brewers’ ability to find diamonds in the rough, reinforcing their reputation for innovative talent scouting.
