Brewers Get Lifeline After Brutal Bucknor Miss

Replay review comes to the rescue as Brewers overturn a critical call, showcasing the pivotal role of technology in the game.

In a game filled with drama and a touch of technology, the Brewers showcased the power of baseball's evolving replay system. Veteran umpire C.B.

Bucknor found himself in the spotlight again, this time at first base, during a game at American Family Field. In the sixth inning, Bucknor ruled that Brewers' first baseman Jake Bauers missed the bag on what looked like a routine play.

However, replay showed Bauers clearly touched the center of the base, overturning the call.

Brewers manager Pat Murphy quickly challenged the call, and the replay left no doubt about Bauers' foot placement. This pivotal moment allowed Bauers to steal second and later score on a Brandon Lockridge double, extending the Brewers' lead to 5-2.

Bauers, dodging any controversy post-game, joked with reporters, "You guys are trying to get me in trouble, man," with a grin. "Just thankful to get on base and come around to score."

The game also featured a lighthearted moment between managers Pat Murphy and Kevin Cash, sharing smiles during the replay. Murphy kept the reason for their exchange under wraps, adding a bit of intrigue before Bucknor's next appearance behind the plate.

Earlier in the week, Bucknor was at the center of attention when the new automated ball-strike challenge system overturned six of his calls in a game between the Red Sox and Reds. Despite the challenges, everyone maintained their composure this time around, with no ejections marring the game.

Bucknor, a seasoned umpire since 1996, shares the distinction of being one of the longest-tenured active umpires alongside Phil Cuzzi. His experience was tested again as replay played a crucial role in the Brewers' victory.

In the fifth inning, replay confirmed that Rays center fielder Cedric Mullins lost control of the ball during a tag attempt, allowing Brice Turang to safely reach second base and score an additional run. Brewers catcher William Contreras also successfully challenged two calls using the ABS system.

The Brewers had plenty to celebrate about the replay system's impact on their game. Bauers summed it up with a quip, "Grateful for that," reflecting the team's appreciation for the technology that played a key role in their win.
