Brewers Face One Huge Game 4 Decision With Season On Line

Walker Buehler steps into a crucial starting role for the Padres as they face a must-win matchup against the Brewers to keep their postseason hopes alive.

The Padres’ season is on the line again Wednesday, and this time they’re handing the ball to Walker Buehler.

After San Diego stayed alive with a 4-3 win over the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday, the club is trying to do it all over again in Game 4 of the National League Division Series. A second straight victory would send the series back to Milwaukee for a winner-take-all Game 5.

San Diego had to lean on a full bullpen effort in Tuesday’s win, using five pitchers to grab its first victory of the series. Michael King, who started Game 2, was part of that mix, helping the Padres keep the matchup from ending early.

Buehler hasn’t pitched yet this postseason, but the right-hander brings a long track record in October from his days with the Los Angeles Dodgers. He looked like a possible Game 1 option before going on the paternity list when he and his wife welcomed their second child. He rejoined the roster Monday and now gets the ball in one of the biggest spots of San Diego’s year.

"Walker will play a big role in this series at some point," manager Craig Stammen said before the series. "I don't know when that is. But he's got such a playoff pedigree that it will be hard for us to leave him out and not give him a chance to put his mark on the series."

Buehler came to the Padres on a minor league deal and won a spot in the rotation during spring competition. He ended up staying there all year, making 32 starts with a 4.63 ERA and 131 strikeouts over 153.2 innings. His second half was stronger, too, as he posted a 3.62 ERA over 13 starts after the break.

His postseason résumé is the kind teams trust in this spot: 19 career playoff games, 18 of them starts. The lone exception came most recently, when he recorded the final three outs of the 2024 World Series against the New York Yankees. In all, Buehler owns a 3.04 ERA across 94.2 postseason innings with 114 strikeouts, including a 3.60 ERA over 15 postseason innings in 2024.

On the other side, Brewers manager Pat Murphy has not named his starter for Game 4. He did, however, point to a few possibilities from his own staff.

"You can look at our roster and see who we've started in these situations," Murphy said. "[Robert] Gasser's made starts for us.

Chad Patrick's made starts for us. [Shane] Drohan's made starts for us.

After this is over, we're going to sit down. Staff is going to be waiting for me, and we'll sit down, and we'll talk about it."

He added: "We've just got to kind of regroup here and see where everybody's at."

William Contreras Just Put Brewers Fans On Notice About His Future

William Contreras has spent the NLDS reminding everyone why he has become such an important piece of the Brewers lineup, delivering big home runs in Games 1 and 3 against the Padres while continuing the steady work that has made him a fixture in Milwaukee since arriving in 2022. Durability has been part of the appeal, too, with Contreras topping 140 games in each season he has worn a Brewers uniform, giving the club a middle-of-the-order bat it can trust through the grind of a long year.

Now the attention shifts beyond October, because Contreras has already opened the door to a bigger question about what comes next. In a recent interview, he said he is scheduled to be a free agent after the 2027 season unless he signs an extension, and he acknowledged some uncertainty about whether his future will remain in Milwaukee. For a Brewers team that values stability and impact performers, that kind of long-term uncertainty is the sort of storyline that can linger well past the final out of this playoff run. [Read more 🡒]

Brewers Just Got A Game 3 Opening Padres Fans Hate

The Padres are making an unexpected lineup change for Game 3 of the NLDS, going into Milwaukee without Gavin Sheets in the starting nine because of a stiff neck. Sheets is still available off the bench, but Samad Taylor moves into the batting order as San Diego tries to extend its season against a Brewers club that has already put the pressure squarely on the visitors.

Nick Pivetta gets the ball for San Diego in a must-win game, his second postseason start since returning from injury. For Milwaukee, the tweak adds another layer to a night already shaped by urgency, with the Brewers needing only to stay steady against a Padres team that has had to adjust on the fly just to keep its lineup intact. Pat Murphy's Game 4 Pitching Choice Could Decide The Brewers' Season

With their season hanging by a thread, the Brewers are already looking ahead to Game 4 of the National League Division Series, where Pat Murphy will have to make one of the biggest pitching decisions of the year. Murphy has not announced a starter, but the discussion is centered on Robert Gasser and Chad Patrick, two arms who could be asked to help keep Milwaukee alive after losses in the first three games.

Gasser has been trending in the right direction lately, while Patrick has generally been effective aside from one rough outing late in the season. Kyle Harrison is also part of the conversation, though his role is less clear after recent performance left more questions than answers. For a Brewers team trying to extend its October run, the choice could shape not just Game 4, but the direction of the entire series. [Read more 🡒]
