The Brewers’ roster shuffle this week pushed Bryse Wilson out of the organization, and now the 28-year-old right-hander is on the open market.
Milwaukee designated Wilson for assignment to create space for Lyon Richardson. After going through waivers, he went unclaimed, and Hunter Baumgardt of Fox Sports 920 reported that Wilson cleared waivers, was outrighted to Triple-A Nashville, and then elected free agency.
"Bryse Wilson cleared waivers, was optioned to Triple-A Nashville, and elected free agency," Baumgardt wrote.
That kind of movement is part of life this deep into the season. The Brewers have already played 118 games, and with injuries, slumps, and strong performances all shaping the roster, the back end of the club is starting to churn. Even with the turnover, Milwaukee remains 30 games over .500 at 74-44.
Wilson’s exit wasn’t tied to poor performance in the majors. In fact, he gave the Brewers plenty to like in limited action this season. He appeared in six games and posted a 2.63 ERA over 13 2/3 innings, while striking out 10 and walking none.
That wasn’t a one-off stretch, either. Wilson has had success in Milwaukee before.
In 2023, he turned in a 2.58 ERA across 53 appearances and 76 2/3 innings. Last season, he recorded a 4.04 ERA in 34 outings for the Brewers.
So while the decision to DFA him was a surprise, it fits the reality of roster management in the dog days of summer. Wilson is now free to sign elsewhere, though there’s at least some recent precedent for a reunion. Earlier this year, the Brewers designated Jake Woodford for assignment, he elected free agency, then returned to the club on a minor league deal before eventually leaving again.
A return for Wilson isn’t guaranteed, but it wouldn’t be out of the question.
