Brewers Call Up Top Prospect After Tough Injury Setback

Rising prospect Jeferson Quero steps up for his MLB debut as the Brewers navigate roster changes amidst Andrew Vaughn's injury setback.

The Milwaukee Brewers are gearing up to introduce catching prospect Jeferson Quero to the big leagues. This move comes as first baseman Andrew Vaughn heads to the injured list due to a hand injury.

Quero, a 23-year-old Venezuelan talent, joined the Brewers as an international amateur and began his professional journey in the Arizona Complex League in 2021. His rise through the minors has been steady, with a standout year in 2023 that caught everyone’s attention. That season, Quero showcased his skills with a .262/.339/.440 slash line over 90 games at Double-A, establishing himself as a top-40 prospect in baseball.

However, injuries have since slowed his momentum. Quero’s 2024 season was nearly a wash due to a shoulder injury that required surgery.

Last year, a hamstring issue further limited his play to just 68 games, with only 59 at Triple-A. In those 250 plate appearances, he posted a .255/.336/.412 line.

While his plate discipline remained solid, his power numbers dipped, with only 21 extra-base hits and six homers. These setbacks, combined with questions about his post-surgery arm strength, led to his drop from many top-100 prospect lists.

Despite these challenges, Quero’s potential as a strong catcher remains evident. He has the tools to complement William Contreras in Milwaukee’s catching lineup, although veteran Gary Sanchez currently holds the primary backup role. Sanchez’s experience and consistent league-average performance give him a solid standing on the roster.

With Vaughn sidelined, the Brewers are temporarily operating with three catchers. Vaughn, who impressed with a .308/.375/.493 slash line in 63 games after joining from the White Sox, was slated to be the mainstay at first base.

His injury opens up opportunities for Quero and others. Sanchez might see some action at first base, while Quero provides a right-handed option off the bench.

Additionally, the Brewers have flexibility with switch-hitter Luis Rengifo potentially filling in at first base, sharing third base duties with David Hamilton. Jake Bauers, a lefty with extensive first base experience, could also step in, which might shuffle the outfield lineup to include players like Rengifo, Blake Perkins, or Brandon Lockridge.

This roster shuffle presents an intriguing opportunity for Quero to make his mark while the Brewers navigate Vaughn’s absence.
