Warde Manuel’s run as Michigan’s athletics director is coming to an end, and the timing makes the move even more striking. The university is set to begin looking for a new AD for the first time in a decade, with Manuel leaving at the end of the calendar year despite having signed a five-year extension on Dec. 5, 2024 that was supposed to keep him in Ann Arbor through June 30, 2030.
Manuel’s Michigan story started long before he took over the department. He played football for Bo Schembechler from 1986-89 before a neck injury ended that path, then moved over to track and field and graduated in 1990. After serving as athletics director at UConn, he returned to Michigan in Jan. 2016 for the same job.
On the field, the results under Manuel were undeniable. Michigan won three straight Big Ten titles, captured a national title in football, and added a men’s basketball national championship in April.
But his tenure was never just about the trophies. The department’s recent history has been crowded with scandals, and the accumulation of them appears to have become too much to overcome.
The football program alone produced a long list of problems. Michigan handed down a self-imposed three-game suspension to former head coach Jim Harbaugh after he watched workouts over Zoom during the COVID recruiting dead period, with analysts doing on-field coaching and Harbaugh allegedly misleading NCAA investigators. Then came Connor Stallions’ sign-stealing scandal, which needs no full retelling here.
More trouble followed. Former quarterbacks coach and co-offensive coordinator Matt Weiss was indicted in March 2025 on 14 federal counts of unauthorized access to computers and 10 counts of aggravated identity theft after authorities said he hacked into the private computer accounts of thousands of college athletes while at Michigan. Harbaugh also hired Shemy Schembechler for a brief stretch before he resigned, and Denard Robinson and Greg Scruggs both stepped down in the same offseason after separate drunk driving incidents.
In December, Manuel fired head coach Sherrone Moore after the school learned of an inappropriate relationship with a staffer. Hours later, Moore was arrested and charged after entering the staffer’s apartment without permission. He later pleaded no contest in March to the two misdemeanors and received probation and a fine.
There’s also an active investigation involving former football staffer LaTroy Lewis. In February, the Ann Arbor Police Department said it was looking into allegations of sexual assault tied to a Dec. 2024 incident while Lewis was on the Michigan football staff.
According to the victim’s attorney, Lewis is accused of rape, battery and threatening the life of the female victim. Lewis was later fired from the position he held with the Atlanta Falcons.
Michigan hockey also had its own major fallout under Manuel. He fired Mel Pearson in 2022 after a 68-page report laid out multiple instances of misconduct, including retaliation against former goaltender Strauss Mann for speaking up about the program, bullying and harassing women in the program, and encouraging student-athletes to lie on COVID-19 contact tracing records.
The men’s basketball program went through its own turbulence as well. Juwan Howard was suspended for five games in 2022 after striking Wisconsin assistant Joe Krabbenhoft following a road game, then was fired a year later after Michigan finished 8-24.
And then there’s the coaching turnover that has become impossible to ignore. For the fourth time in seven years, a major Michigan coach who was widely respected by fans moved on, with Manuel as the common thread.
John Beilein left for the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2019. Harbaugh left for the NFL after the national title in Jan.
- Dusty May then departed for the Dallas Mavericks just two months after delivering the program’s first national basketball championship since 1989, drawing criticism of Manuel’s ability to keep top coaches in place.
Now Michigan has to navigate one of the most complicated stretches in the department’s recent memory without the AD who has led it for the last decade. The football program is entering its first season under Kyle Whittingham, the men’s basketball program has a national title and an immediate coaching vacancy to manage, and several controversies still need to be fully sorted out.
At least the university now has a runway to make its next hire. Michigan is one of the biggest jobs in college athletics, so the candidate pool should be deep.
