Tennessee Volunteers cornerback Jermod McCoy has been a hot topic as the 2026 NFL Scouting Combine kicks off in Indianapolis. However, teams eager to see him in action will have to wait a bit longer.
Standing at 6-foot and weighing 193 pounds, McCoy suffered an ACL tear in January 2025, sidelining him for the entire season. Now medically cleared, McCoy has opted to showcase his skills at his pro day, slated for March or early April, rather than at the combine. This decision, reported by Dane Brugler, stems from McCoy’s desire for additional training time.
While McCoy's choice is understandable, it could impact his draft position. A strong showing at the combine might have solidified his status as a potential first-round pick.
Dalton Wasserman from Pro Football Focus highlighted McCoy as a defensive back with significant potential gains at the combine. Despite missing last season, McCoy's 2024 performance was stellar, boasting an 89.6 PFF coverage grade. If he can replicate that form during his pro day, he may still secure a first-round spot.
However, skipping the combine could increase the likelihood of McCoy slipping in the draft, as teams are often cautious with players who have medical histories. A similar situation unfolded with former Michigan Wolverines cornerback Will Johnson. Projected as a first-round pick in 2025, Johnson's injuries led him to miss the combine, and he eventually went to the Arizona Cardinals in the second round.
McCoy's 2024 season was impressive, earning him second-team All-American honors with nine passes defended and four interceptions over 13 games. Demonstrating that his ACL injury is behind him will be crucial at his pro day to maintain his first-round aspirations.
