Tennessee Erupts Second Half To Reach Elite Eight

Tennessee's relentless second-half surge propels them into the Elite 8, overcoming Iowa State's challenge despite a fiercely contested first half.

In a thrilling matchup, the Tennessee Volunteers powered past the Iowa State Cyclones with a commanding 76-62 victory, earning their place in the Elite 8. The game kicked off with both teams struggling to find their rhythm, a situation made tougher for the Cyclones due to the absence of their star player, Joshua Jefferson, who was sidelined with a sprained ankle.

The first half was a gritty, back-and-forth affair, with Tennessee holding a slim one-point lead as the teams headed into the locker rooms. But it was the second half where the Volunteers truly shone, showcasing their dominance inside the paint. With a total of 43 rebounds, Tennessee controlled the boards, which proved pivotal in their success.

A crucial 7-0 run midway through the second half allowed Tennessee to stretch their lead to 14 points, putting Iowa State in a tough spot with just under 12 minutes left on the clock. Although the Cyclones managed a few small scoring bursts in the final stretch, their inability to secure rebounds made it difficult to close the gap.

Felix Okpara was a standout for Tennessee, contributing a double-double with 12 points, 10 rebounds, and 3 blocks. Nate Ament also had a strong performance, leading the team with 18 points, while Ja’Kobie Gillespie added 16 points to the tally.

Tennessee's blend of defensive tenacity and offensive execution in the second half was simply too much for Iowa State to handle, as the Volunteers now set their sights on the next challenge in their tournament journey.
