Morez Johnson Jr. probably envisioned seeing his name on a banner at Illinois’ State Farm Center more than once. However, that dream took a detour when he decided to leave Brad Underwood’s program last season.
Fast forward to now, and Johnson found himself back in Champaign, not as a hometown hero, but as a key player for the Big Ten Champion and No. 3 ranked Michigan men’s basketball team. In this narrative, he played the role of the antagonist for many Illini fans.
“I was expecting a lot of boos,” Johnson admitted. “I just focused on tuning everything out like I always do and concentrated on playing basketball, which is why I’m here.”
After securing a share of the conference title earlier in the week, Johnson and the Wolverines came to Illinois with a clear mission: to claim the title outright. Meanwhile, the Illini were still in the hunt for a piece of the championship pie.
“We know our brothers,” Johnson emphasized. “Staying united is key.
To win, we need each other. It’s not a one-man show.”
Graduate forward Yaxel Lendeborg highlighted the significance of this matchup for Johnson and, by extension, the entire team. During the pregame shootaround, Lendeborg sported a ‘21’ jersey, all while a clown cardboard cutout of Johnson loomed from the student section.
“They didn’t have enough jerseys for everyone, so I went and grabbed it,” Lendeborg joked after the game.
But once the game tipped off, all the theatrics faded into the background. On Michigan’s first possession, Johnson went head-to-head with forward David Mirkovic. Despite Illinois’ impressive size, which usually prevents teams from overpowering them, Johnson was undeterred.
“I just did a good job of ignoring everything,” Johnson said. “All that outside noise?
It’s just nonsense. It literally doesn’t matter at all.”
Johnson’s focus and determination shone through, making his return to Champaign a memorable chapter in his basketball journey.
