Michigan’s new head coach Mike Boynton Jr. is already working the recruiting trail, and the Wolverines are set to bring one of the top guards in the 2027 class to campus.
Five-star Chase Lumpkin will visit Michigan on July 22, according to On3’s Joe Tipton. Michigan offered Lumpkin in June, and Boynton Jr. has been the one pushing to get him on campus for an official visit.
Lumpkin, a 6-foot-4, 180-pound guard from Powder Springs, Georgia, and McEachern, is ranked as the No. 25 prospect in the 2027 class by 247Sports. He’s also listed as the No. 5 combo guard on that site, while On3 has him as a point guard. He has already taken unofficial visits to Georgia, Georgia Tech, Alabama, Tennessee, and Kentucky.
His official visit schedule is already filling up, too. Lumpkin is set to take official visits to USC in late August and Alabama in the middle of September.
On the EYBL circuit, Lumpkin is putting up nearly 18 points per game, along with more than five rebounds and five assists per game. He told Rivals that the fit matters most to him.
“I really need to go somewhere I can develop the most and get to the next level and become a pro player, where I’ve got belief in the coaching staff and they’ve got belief in me. I just want to get to the next level.”
Rivals’ Jamie Shaw also came away impressed after scouting him, calling Lumpkin his breakout player of the weekend. Shaw said Lumpkin can “shoot the cover off the ball,” and described him as a strong initiator who brings real passing ability.
“Lumpkin was the breakout player of the weekend. The Jet Academy guard did a little bit of everything for his team, initiating offense, finishing plays, and generally creating advantages for his team.
He showcased excellent vision on the ball, and he processed quickly and efficiently, whether that was getting the ball to his teammates or making shots on his own accord. Lumpkin got into the paint consistently, and he finished well at the rim," Shaw wrote.
Michigan is still looking for its first commitment in the 2027 cycle. After landing one of the top classes in 2026, Boynton Jr. would like to get the next group moving quickly.
Lumpkin would make plenty of sense for that push. Michigan could have a path to a new lead guard soon, with point guard Elliot Cadeau able to return under the new 5-for-5 rule even though this is his fourth college season. Cadeau, though, appears headed toward the NBA if he turns in another strong year.
That leaves Michigan with a clear need at point guard, and while the transfer portal remains an option, the Wolverines would surely prefer to land a five-star guard who can run the offense.
Boynton Jr. has already shown he can recruit, and now Michigan will see whether that momentum carries all the way to Lumpkin.
